VC Volleyball Giving Back

 VB  4-25-2012  The Pirates' volleyball team has joined with the Channel islands Volleyball Club to raise money for the March of Dimes Foundation.  March for Babies is an annual walk held by the March of Dimes that raises money to fight the battle against premature births.  THe VC team is joining all of the various Channel Islands teams in holding a 10 minute serving contest at their upcoming practices and off-season classes. WTennis Moves to Showdown

 WTen  4-24-2012 The No. 2 seed Ventura College women's tennis team advanced to the CCCAA SoCal Regional Finals with a 5-2 victory over Orange Coast on Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center.  The win sets up a showdown with the undefeated Pirates traveling to face the undefeated Palomar Comets Tuesday May 1 in a match for a state championship appearance.  Julianna Bacelar (No. 1), Jessica Worring (No. 2), and Sonia Landeros (No. 3) all dominated their singles competition, and Layne Gallimore (No. 4) produced a 6-4, 6-4 win.  The No. 1 doubles team of Bacelar and Gallimore also produced a 6-0, 6-0 win for the team victory.  READ MORE... 

VC Falls to MSJC in Playoffs

 MTen  4-24-2012 The Pirates' men's tennis team saw its team season come to an end Tuesday at Mt. San Jacinto as VC dropped a CCCAA SoCal Regional Semifinal  match to the Eagles 5-1.  Eder Giotto was the lone victor at No. 5 singles, winning his match 6-3, 6-4.  Meanwhile the other Pirates, Jonathan Lin (No. 1), Dylan Cleary (No. 2), Cameron Lee (No. 4), and Tyler Sperry (No. 6), all played hard, but ultimately lost in straight sets.  The loss ends the team season with the Pirates posting a record of 17-5, including their seventh straight Western State Conference championship with an 8-0 mark.  READ MORE...

Pirates Split Season With MC

 Base  4-24-2012  The Ventura College baseball team battled, but could not hold off Moorpark, dropping a 5-3 decision Tuesday at the VC Baseball Complex to split the season series with the Raiders, 2-2.  Jared Peterson smacked two hits and drew a walk, scoring a run and driving in another.  RJ Deitz had a hit and scored a run and Dewey Grattan had an RBI on a first inning single.  Reliever Michael Arias made a spot start, pitching four solid innings and giving up just one run.  Ventura (17-15, 7-11) held a 3-2 lead before Moorpark plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to seal the win. Pirates Split, Await Playoffs

 SB   4-23-2012  The Pirate softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Monday in their regular season finale Monday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.  VC dropped a hard-fought 4-2 decision to the host Mounties before defeating Riverside 4-2 in the nightcap.  Raelene Moreno had three hits, all doubles, and three RBI in the two games while Candice Garcia also had three hits, including a home run, knocking in a pair of runs.  Teresa Lemos pitched both games for the Pirates (32-7), picking up 12 strike outs for her efforts.  VC now awaits its playoff seeding, with the first post-season game scheduled for May 5.  READ MORE...  

Pirate Golf Moves Up in WSC

 Golf   4-23-2012  The Ventura College golf team moved into third place in the conference standings with their fourth place finish at the Western State Conference event hosted by Allan Hancock College at Santa Maria Country Club on Monday.  VC posted a team score of 378 to finish behind Glendale (365), Canyons (366) and Hancock (377).  Individually, Ventrua was led by Andrew Garcia, who shot an even-par 72, followed by Timmy Snyder (74), Taylor Stein (75), Roman Barnes (76) and Chad McLay (81).  The Pirates moved past Santa Barbara into third place in the WSC standings with a head-to-head record of 25-23, a game ahead of Hancock (24-24). VC Swimmer Chung Breaking Records Early in First Season

 Swim  4-22-2012  From the Ventura County Star  Records are meant to be broken.  Just not until the end of the season, when swimmers are optimally tuned and ready to give their best performances.  Freshman Henry Chung, on the other hand, was challenging and breaking Ventura College school records in the middle of his debut season this spring.  The season wasn't a month old when Chung, on his fifth swim of the day at the Cuesta Invitational, broke the 100-yard backstroke mark. The 50-yard freestyle record fell two weeks later.  "It's been a long, long time since we've had a school record broken in the middle of the season," Ventura coach Larry Baratte said last month.  READ MORE... 

Pirates Sweep WSC Finals

 Swim  4-21-2012  With contributions from the Ventura County Star  The Pirates' men's and women's swimming teams swept the Western State Conference Championships for the eighth time in the past decade in the championship meet that was completed on Saturday in Bakersfield.  Henry Chung was awarded the male Athlete of the Year for his performance in the meet, which included a victory in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday.  The VC men won their 10th straight WSC title with 778.5 points as compared to Cuesta's 701 in second place.  Abby Puczkowski swam on the WSC-record setting  400-yard freestyle relay, and won the 100-yard backstroke to lead the Pirate women to the title with 747 points.  Santa Monica was second at 529.  READ MORE... 

Ventura Wins at Moorpark

 Base  4-21-2012  The Pirates' baseball team fell behind early, but picked up three runs in the fifth inning, another in the seventh, and three more in the eighth to defeat rival Moorpark 7-2 on the road Saturday afternoon.  Freshman Joey Contreras pitched into the seventh inning to pick up his seventh victory of the season while freshman Jared Peterson had three hits with three RBI and scored a run to lead the Pirate offense.  VC (17-14, 7-10) will host the Raiders on Tuesday April 24 at 2:30 pm in possibly the final meeting between the rivals as Moorpark is suspending the program following the season due to budget concerns.. MTennis Qualifies 7 for SoCal

 MTen  4-20-2012 The Pirates' men's tennis team qualified seven players for the Southern California Regionals at the recently completed Western State Conference Tournament.  The draw, completed on April 14 and 20 at the VC Tennis Center, narrowed down the conference to eight singles competitors and eight doubles teams to qualify for the individual regional tournament.  Jonathan Lin was the lone VC qualifier in the singles competition while the doubles teams of Tyler Sperry and Nick Bezzubchenko, Dylan Cleary and Cameron Lee, and Paulo Fernandes and Eder Giotto all qualified for future competition.  The SoCal regionals will be held May 3-5 at Irvine Valley College. VC Swim Closing in on Sweep

 Swim  4-20-2012  From the Ventura County Star  The Ventura College men’s and women’s swimming teams are a day away from sweeping the WSC championships for the eighth time in the past 10 years.  A trio of VC women put together championship swims with personal best performances Friday at Bakersfield as the VC women built a near triple-digit cushion.  Abby Puczkowski won the 200-yard freestyle, Christina Robledo won the 50-yard backstroke, and sophomore Shyla Motley won the 50 breaststroke.  Looking to regain the title it let slip to LA Pierce last spring, the VC women lead second-place Cuesta 463-367  Meanwhile the Pirate men opened a 78-point lead over Cuesta, 528-450 as freshman Henry Chung and sophomore Tyler Kaslik both captured their second individual titles in as many days.  READ MORE... 

Tracksters Advance at Prelims

 T&F   4-20-2012  The Pirates' men's and women's track and field teams compete at the Western State Conference Preliminaries Friday at Santa Barbara, with numerous athletes qualifying for the conference finals or advancing to the SoCal Regionals.  Preliminary races were held on the track while finals were held in selected field events at the meet.  The qualifiers were headed by Jessica Johns in the shot put, whose throw of 41'3 1/4" won the event.  Meanwhile Melvin Tavares (10.95) and Lamar Gray (11.13) headed the men's qualifiers in the 100 meter dash.  The WSC finals will be held Friday April 27 at Moorpark College and the SoCal Regionals are Saturday May 5 at San Diego Mesa.    READ MORE... 

VC Swimming Leads After Day 1

 Swim  4-19-2012  The Pirates' men's and women's swimming teams took the early lead after day one of the three-day Western State Conference championships at Bakersfield College on Thursday.  The VC men amassed 251 points to 195 for Cuesta while the women totaled  188 points to 175 for second place Cuesta.  Henry Chung set WSC records in the 50-yard freestyle (20.23 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (49.42) to lead the men while VC had a pair of women's relays set new conference marks, the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.57) and the 400-yard medley relay (4:01.18).  READ MORE... 

Pirates Walk-Off Condors in 13

 Base  4-19-2012  The Ventura College Pirate baseball team picked up the victory on Thursday afternoon in thrilling fashion, winning 4-2 over Oxnard in 13 innings on the strength of freshman Eric Contreras' two-run walk off home run. The Pirates (16-14, 6-10) scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning and then went eight straight frames without another score, stranding several runners in scoring position before the game-winning blast that also scored sophomore Dewey Grattan, who had led off the inning with a single.  Sophomore Dustin Babola started for the final time at home, throwing 10 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs, only one of which was earned. Softball Wins WSC Finale

 SB   4-19-2012  The Ventura College softball team completed its 2012 Western State Conference schedule with an 8-1 win at Cuesta College Thursday.   Clarissa Samaniego knocked the first pitch of the game over the fence, and she added a single and a double later in the game for a three-hit performance.  Jen Moreno had a pair of hits, including a double on the second pitch of the game, and Julie Cortez knocked a grand slam home run in the top of the seventh inning.  Teresa Lemos pitched the win while Danielle Saleh picked up the save. for VC (31-6, 16-2).  READ MORE...  

Pirates Win in Playoffs

 MTen  4-17-2012 The Ventura College men's tennis team swept through the first round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs Tuesday, defeating Riverside 5-0.  Camreon Lee (No. 3) won his singles match 6-0, 6-1 while Eder Giotto (No. 5) won 6-1, 6-2.  Tyler Sperry (No. 6) was victorious 6-2, 6-2 and Dylan Cleary (No. 2) won his match 6-3, 4-0, retired.  Paulo Fernandes (No. 4) won a close one, 7-6, 6-3, and Jonathan Lin (No. 1) was still on the court when the match was clinched for the Pirates (17-4).  WTen  4-17-2012 The No. 2 seed VC women's tennis team continued their unbeaten season with a 5-0 sweep of Rio Hondo in the first round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs Tuesday at the VC Tennis Center.  Julianna Bacelar (No. 1) Jessica Worring (No. 2), Sonia Landeros (No. 3), and Grace Hanamoto (No. 6) all posted 6-0, 6-0 victories while Layne Gallimore (No. 4) won her singles match 6-0, 6-1.  Meanwhile Carolyn Morris (No. 5) was ahead 6-0, 1-0 when the Pirates (16-0) clinched the match. VC Continues March to Playoffs

 SB   4-17-2012  The WSC champion Pirates' softball team continued their march to the post-season with a double-header sweep at Allan Hancock College Tuesday.  Ventura won game one 12-2 before edging the Bulldogs 8-7 in the nightcap.  The Pirate offense exploded for 28 hits in the two games, led by Clarissa Samaniego who hit for the cycle in the double header with two singles, a double, a triple, and a pair of home runs with four RBI.  Teresa Lemos pitched both wins, moving her season record to 24-5 for the Pirates (30-6, 15-2).  READ MORE...  

VC Drops Game at Oxnard

 Base  4-17-2012  The Ventura College baseball team got on the board first once again, but eight unanswered runs by the Oxnard Condors dashed their hopes as VC dropped a 9-2 decision to their intra-county rivals on the road Tuesday afternoon.  Dewey Grattan had an RBI base hit in the eighth inning for the Pirates (16-15, 5-10), whose defense let them down twice during OC's five-run second inning.  Ventura managed just six hits on the day on offense.  Joey Contreras started on the mound for VC, lasting three innings, and Jordan Yussman had an inning of scoreless relief.  Golf   4-16-2012  The Pirates' golf team finished in the middle of the pack at the Western State Conference event at Oakmont Country Club hosted by Glendale College.  VC (22-20) carded a team score of 404 to finish fourth, behind the hst Vaqueros (390), Canyons (395) and Hancock (399).  Timmy Snyder was the low Pirate with a 79 on the par-72 course, followed by Andy Stanfield (80), Chad McLay (81), Andrew Garcia and Taylor Stein (82) and Jordan Thomas (87).   READ MORE...

Pirates Compete in Final Tune-Up

 T&F   4-14-2012  A small group of the VC men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 54th annual Mt. SAC Relays as a final tune up before next week's Western State Conference prelims.  Tara Johnson was the lone track athlete to run well, as she place second in her heat of the 100 meters and fourth in the 200 meters (both performances were her second-best runs of the season).  The lone medalists for the Pirates were Jessica Johns in the shot put and Bennie Kirkwood in the high jump.  Kirkwood's performance was good for sole possession of first place in the event. Pirates' Slide Continues

 Base  4-14-2012  Despite a fast start with two runs in the top of the first inning, the Ventura College baseball team stranded 14 runners during the game, leading to a 3-2 defeat at Santa Barbara City College Saturday afternoon.  Sophomore Dennis Doherty was the hard-luck loser on the mound, pitching seven strong innings giving up three runs, two earned, scattering five hits with one strikeout.  Freshmen Timmy Ginther and Matt Burke had multi-hit days for VC (16-14, 5-9), but the Vaqueros prevailed to split the season series with the Pirates. VC's Chung Makes Long Trip for Olympic Trials

 Swim  4-13-2012 From the Ventura County Star  A swimmer's primary opponent is always the clock and his own body.  Ventura College freshman Henry Chung will be uniquely reminded of those confines this weekend, as he attempts to qualify for the Olympic team in his native Hong Kong.  For the opportunity, Chung will spend roughly the same amount of time aboard planes as he will on the ground in Hong Kong — 32 hours.  "I'll do a little bit of stretching and walk around the plane to keep my body ready for the race," said Chung, who left LAX late Thursday, will arrive in Asia on Saturday morning and will return Sunday. "I might have a little jet lag, but I still think I have an opportunity to quality."  READ MORE... 

VC Softball WSC Gold Champs!

 SB   4-12-2012  On a day the Pirates' honored their sophomore class of 2012, that class led the VC softball team to a 17-0 victory over visiting Los Angeles Pierce College, clinching the Western State Conference Gold Division championship.  The class of 2012, who was recognized as a CCCAA State Scholar Team for the 2010-11 academic year, now has produced 50 wins over two seasons, in addition to the conference title, the second in three years for VC and the program's 10th overall since 1980.  Sophomore Teresa Lemos led the way for VC (28-6, 13-2) pitching a two-hitter, striking out 10.  READ MORE...

 Base  4-12-2012  The Pirates' baseball team continued its conference slide with a 5-2 loss to Santa Barbara City College Thursday afternoon at the VC Baseball Complex.  The Ventura offense was limited to seven hits on the day with freshman Timmy Ginther producing two safeties while sophomore Dewey Grattan added a pair of hits, including a double, with an RBI.  Freshman RJ Dietz had an RBI double and freshman Jared Patterson had a hit and scored a run for VC (16-13, 5-8).  READ MORE... 

Golf Has Off Day at San Dimas

 Golf   4-11-2012  The Ventura College golf team played in soggy conditions Wednesday, producing an off-day for the team as they finished sixth at the 7-team Western State Conference event at San Dimas Golf Course, hosted by Citrus College.   Canyons won the event with a team score of 345, followed by Glendale (364) and Santa Barbara (371) while VC turned in a score of 383.  Taylor Stein was the low Pirate on the par-72 course with a 2-under 70, followed by Chad McLay (73), Andy Stanfield (78), Jordan Thomas (79) and Roman Barnes (81).  VC (19-17) now sits in fourth place in the conference standings, three matches behind Santa Barbara. Softball Close to Gold Title

 SB   4-10-2012  The Pirate softball team got untracked Tuesday with a double-header sweep of second-place Santa Barbara, 4-1 and 8-0.  What had been reduced to a 1½ game Western State Conference Gold Division lead last week for VC was extended to a 3½ game cushion with four games left in conference action, all but assuring Ventura of their second title in three years, the 10th in program history.  Candice Garcia had four hits and two RBI on the day, and scored the game-ending run in the sixth inning of the nightcap.  VC (27-6, 12-2) will try to wrap up the conference title on Thursday at 2:30 pm at home against LA Pierce.  READ MORE...  

VC Drops Suspended Game, 7-3

 Base  3-31-2012  (Updated 4-10-12)  The Pirate baseball team was tied at Allan Hancock College 3-3 on March 31 in Santa Maria when the rains came.  The Western State Conference contest was suspended at that point, and resumed Tuesday, with the Pirates giving up four runs to the Bulldogs, falling 7-3.  Jared Patterson, Dewey Grattan, and Albert Squires all had two hits and all had scored a run for VC (16-12, 5-7) before the 10-day rain-delay. Juarez Shines at Lister Invite

 T&F   4-7-2012  Pirate sophomore Oscar Juarez was the lone bright spot for VC during the Tommy "Tiny" Lister track Invitational at Cal State Los Angeles University. Juarez competing in the hammer throw competition on Friday afternoon, won his flight and for good measure sent the school record packing. He tossed a life-time best and all-time Pirate best of 153-feet 6-inches to wipe Miguel Campos' 151-foot 9-inch record set in 2003 from the books. "(Throws) Coach (Tom) Lawrence has been telling me for two years that either Tevin Jones or Juarez had the potential to break the record, and that it was just a matter of time", said head coach Tony Veney.  READ MORE... 

VC Swimming Sweeps WSC

 Swim  4-6-2012  The Ventura College men's and women's swim teams completed yet another undefeated Western State Conference campaign on Friday, sweeping a triangular meet at LA Pierce College.  The VC men scored 147 points to defeat Canyons (68) and Pierce (56) while the women's total of 138 also defeated CoC (53) and LAPC (49).  The win marks 88 straight head-to-head conference victories for the men dating back through the 2003 season while the women have posted an 86-2 record during that same time span.  Coleman Goode was a double winner for the Pirate men while Abby Puczkowski and Taylor Amstutz were double winners for the women.  READ MORE... 

Pirates First at Golf Quad

 Golf   4-6-2012  Battling tough weather conditions, the Pirates' golf team finished first in a non-conference quad meet Friday at Marshalia Ranch Golf Club outside of Lompoc.  VC defeated second place Glendale, and also finished ahead of Santa Barbara and Fresno.  Andrew Garcia posted the low score of 74 for the Pirates on the par-72 course, while Andy Stanfield scored a 77.  Chad McLay followed with an 80 while Roman Barnes carded an 82.  Timmy Snyder and Jordan Thomas followed with an 83 and 84, respectively.  READ MORE...

VC Sweeps Pair at Porterville

 Base  4-5-2012  In a a battle of Pirates, the Ventura College Pirates swept a double-header from the Porterville College Pirates 5-3 and 6-2 Thursday in the Central Valley.  VC aces Joey Contreras and Dustin Babola earned their sixth and fifth wins of the season, respectively, and Dewey Grattan pounded out six hits, four for extra bases, scoring three times with three RBI.  Eric Contreras added five hits at the plate for VC (16-11, 5-6), playing their final non-conference contest before the stretch run of the season.  READ MORE... 

Pirate SB Falls in Walk-Off

 SB   4-5-2012  What was smooth sailing for the Ventura College softball team has suddenly become the doldrums of the middle of the season.  The Pirates lost their third game in four outings Thursday when their seventh inning comeback was thwarted by Moorpark's own comeback in the bottom of the frame, as the Raiders prevailed with a walk-off fashion, 6-5.  VC (25-6, 10-2) scored a run in the third and sixth innings, and plated three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.  But the margin did not hold as Moorpark scored two in the bottom of the seventh for the win.  Clarissa Samaniego had a pair of hits with an RBI and Jennifer Moreno hit a homerun for Ventura.  READ MORE...

 MTen  4-4-2012 The Pirates' men's tennis team ended its regular season with a 9-0 non-conference sweep over visiting Victor Valley Wednesday at the VC Tennis Center.  VC (16-4, 8-0) dominated the match with Dylan Cleary, Eder Giotto, and Felipe De Paulo all winning their singles matches 6-0, 6-0.  Cameron Lee and Paulo Fernandes each lost but one game while De Paulo and Giotto won their No. 3 doubles match 8-0.   READ MORE...

Softball Splits Pair at Oxnard

 SB   4-3-2012  Two days after their 15-game winning streak came to an end, the Pirates' softball team saw their 10-game Western State Conference Gold Division winning streak end as well.  VC defeated the Condors 3-0 in the first game of a double header Tuesday in Oxnard, but fell 2-1 in the nightcap.  Candice Garcia led the offense with three hits and two RBI on the day and Teresa Lemos allowed but two runs in 14 innings of work on the mound.  Jennifer Moreno and Katrina Gutierrez also knocked in runs for VC (25-5, 10-1).     READ MORE...

 Golf   4-2-2012  On a picture perfect day in the hills above the Oxnard plain, the Ventura College golf team placed third in their home Western State Conference match at Saticoy Country Club.  Conference-leading Canyons was first, posting a score of 379, followed by Glendale, 382, and VC, 391.  Taylor Stein finished as the top Ventura golfer, carding a 75 on the tough par-72 course, followed by Andrew Garcia and Roman Barnes at 76.  Chad McLay turned in an 80 while Andy Stanfield and Jordan Thomas each had an 84. Pirates Win 3 at Spring Games

 SB   4-1-2012  The Ventura College softball team won their first three games of the annual VC Spring Games, stretching their winning streak to 15 games before falling to the No. 1-ranked team in the state in their final contest of the weekend.  VC (24-4, 9-0) defeated Santa Ana 3-1 and Antelope Valley 4-3 on Saturday before besting Mt. San Jacinto 4-3 on Sunday morning.  In the weekend's finale, the two-time defending state champion Cypress Chargers proved to be too much for the Pirates, leaving with a 10-0 victory.  Sophomore pitcher Teresa Lemos was outstanding, winning three games on the mound and was key with the bat, as well.  READ MORE...

Pirate M & W Win Track Meet

 T&F   3-30-2012  The Pirates' men's and women's track and field team both came away on top of the Western State Conference scoring meet on Friday in San Luis Obispo at Cuesta College.  The men waited until the last two events to close out their first place finish, edging Santa Barbara 130 points to 117.  Cuesta was third with 111 followed by Moorpark, Santa Monica, and Hancock.  The VC women, meanwhile, dominated the team competition with 171 points, followed by Moorpark's 125 and 108 from Cuesta.  Santa Barbara, Hancock, and Santa Monica rounded out the meet standings.  Phillip Hanley led the Pirate men while Amber Panapa led the women. READ MORE... 

Pirate Swimming Wins Tri-Meet

 Swim  3-30-2012  Pirates' men's and women's swimming teams swept through a Western State Conference triangular meet at Bakersfield Friday.  The women earned 123 points to Bakersfield's 54 and LA Valley's 28.  Meanwhile the VC men scored 117 points compared to 48 for LA Valley and 45 for Bakersfield.  Henry Chung  and Coleman Goode were double winners for the men and Abigail Puczkowski and Gaby Romero won two events each for the women's team.  Both teams moved to 10-0 in head-to-head competition with their WSC rivals on the season.  READ MORE... 

Six Named to VC Hall of Fame

3-30-2012  From the Ventura County Star  A quintet of All-American and record-setting athletes are joined by its longest-serving men's basketball coach to form the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame's sixth class, unveiled earlier this month by the VC Athletic Association.  The class includes basketball coach George Hails and his guard Paul Harvey (1956), as well as football guard Lex Byrd (1956), runner George Gibb (1966), swimmer Jeff Barrett (2003) and softball shortstop Tisha Duran (2004).  "This class is probably the most diverse class inducted into the hall," VCAA president Ric Ruffinelli said.  READ MORE...  

Softball Hosts Spring Games

 SB   3-29-2012  The Pirates' softball team, ranked No. 15 in Southern California, will host 13 other teams from throughout the state in the 2012 Ventura College Spring Games Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1, at the VC Softball Complex.  The teams will participate in 22 contests on three different fields beginning at 8:30am on Saturday.  Seven of the teams are ranked in the northern and southern California coaches polls, respectively.  VC will open with Santa Ana College at 8:30 am on Saturday on field three and follow that up with a 2:30 pm contest against Antelope Valley on field one.  On Sunday the Pirates battle Mt. WTennis Remains Undefeated

 WTen  3-29-2012 The Ventura College women's tennis team, ranked No. 1 in Southern California, remained undefeated with an easy 9-0 sweep at Bakersfield College Thursday.  The win completes dual play in the Western State Conference with the Pirates (15-0, 8-0) sitting atop the standings.  In singles play, Julianna Bacelar (No. 1) and Jessica Worring (No. 2) each won 6-0, 6-0, while Sonia Landeros (No. 3) and Grace Hanamoto (No. 6) both won 6-1, 6-0.  Layne Gallimore (No. 4) and Carolyn Morris (No. 6) also won singles matches and VC swept the doubles competition as well. Pirates Wrap Up WSC

 MTen  3-29-2012 The Pirates' men's tennis team wrapped up their 2012 Western State Conference schedule with a 9-0 sweep of Bakersfield Thursday afternoon at the VC Tennis Center.  VC (15-4, 9-0) thoroughly dominated the match, with none of the singles players dropping more than two games in each match.  Cameron Lee (No. 3) led the way with a one and love win while Eder Giotto (No. 4) was victorious two and love.  Jonathan Lin (No. 1), Dylan Cleary (No. 2), Felipe De Paulo (No. 5) and Jonathan Malta (No. 6) all won matches by a 6-1, 6-1 score.  Ventura won all three doubles matches by an 8-2 margin. VC Falls in Extra Innings

 Base  3-29-2012  Freshman Joey Contreras threw a heck of a game.  He pitched nine scoreless innings on Thursday as the Pirates hosted Allan Hancock College, but unfortunately, nine was not enough.  The VC offense could not score, and managed but three hits on the day, sending the 0-0 game into extra innings.  Contreras issued a lead-off walk in the top of the 10th, and the Ventura relievers could not keep the Bulldogs down as the Pirates fell 4-0 after one extra frame.  Joe Kelly's double and singles by Matt Burke and Jared Patterson were the only hits in the game for VC (14-11, 5-6).  READ MORE... 

WSC 7-Peat for Men's Tennis

 MTen  3-27-2012 The 2012 season has been a struggle at times for the Pirates' men's tennis team, but in the end, one thing will remain the same.  VC clinched their seventh consecutive Western State Conference championship with a hard-fought 5-4 win over visiting Los Angeles Pierce College Tuesday. Women's Tennis: WSC Champs!

 WTen  3-27-2012 The Pirates' women's tennis team has been on a roll all season long.  With heir No. 1 ranking in tow, the defeated defending state champion Santa Monica College 8-1 on Tuesday on the road to clinch the program's first Western State Conference championship since 2007.  VC (14-0, 7-0) maintained its unbeaten record by sweeping the singles competition and taking two of three doubles contests.  Layne Gallimore led the way at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win while Sonia Landeros and Jessica Worring won their No. 2 doubles contest 8-1. Softball Sits Atop WSC Gold

 SB   3-27-2012  Through one round of conference play, the Ventura College softball its atop the Gold Division of the Western State Conference with an undefeated record after a double-header sweep of visiting Cuesta College Tuesday afternoon, 6-1 and 10-2.  Raelene Moreno provided the big bat, hitting for the cycle in the double dip with five hits total.  She also had five RBI in the contest.  Katrina Gutierrez smacked out three hits with a pair of RBI.  Teresa Lemos, Danielle Saleh, and Gutierrez shared pitching duties for the Pirates (21-3, 9-0).   READ MORE...  

Pirates Push No. 2 Cuesta

 Base  3-27-2012  With the wind blowing out and the No. 2-ranked Cuesta Cougars in town, the Pirate baseball team gave it a run Tuesday afternoon.  After spotting the Cougars a three run cushion, VC bounced back to take a 5-4 lead.  Cuesta regained control 9-6, and finally outlasted Ventura 9-8 as both teams completed their first run through the Western State Conference North Division schedule.  Freshman Timmy Ginther, sophomore Dewey Grattan, and freshman Joe Kelly each had a pair of hits for VC (14-10, 5-5) as eight of the nine starters either scored or drove in a run in the game.  READ MORE... 

Pirate Golf 5th at WSC-Citrus

 Golf   3-26-2012  The Ventura College men's golf team managed a  fifth place finish at the Western State Conference event hosted by Citrus College.  At the par 72 Glendora Country Club course, Ventura posted a team score of 380, finishing behind Glendale (360), Canyons (369), Santa Barbara (370), and Hancock (379).  Andrew Garcia was the top individual for the Pirates once again with a one-over 73, followed by Jordan Thomas (74), Roman Barnes (76), Timmy Snyder (78), and Chad McLay (79).   READ MORE...

VC Splits at N/S Challenge

 MTen  3-24-2012 The Ventura College men's tennis team split four matches at the North/South Cahllenge in Fresno over the weekend.  Missing their No. 1 singles player, Jonathan Lin, due to injury, the Pirates had every player move up in singles competition.  They fell to Fresno City College, theNo. 1 ranked team No. 1 in Northern California, by a 9-0 margin and lost to No. 2 Foothill 6-3.  VC (13-4, 6-0) rebounded to defeat Sierra 6-0 and No. 5 American River 9-0 to salvage a split for the weekend.  The doubles team of Dylan Cleary and Cameron Lee won three matches over the weekend while Eder Giotto, Jonathan Malta and Tyler Sperry each won two singles matches.

Pirates Take Two at Home

 SB   3-24-2012  The Ventura College softball team stretched its winning streak to 10 games with a pair of non-conference victories at home Saturday.  They defeated San Diego City 6-1 in the first game of the day and exacted  a measure of redemption in the second, defeating Long Beach 8-1 in the second (Ventura lost to the Vikings 2-1 in the season opener).  Teresa Lemos started both games, collecting each victory  She had 14 strikeouts in 12 innings of work.  Meanwhile, Clarissa Samaniego had three hits on the day and Candice Garcia and Lemos each had a pair of safeties for the Pirates (19-3, 7-0).   READ MORE...  

Baseball Falls at Cuesta

 Base  3-24-2012  The Pirate baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to conference frontrunning Cuesta College Saturday afternoon in San Luis Obispo.  After falling behind 2-0, the Pirates (14-9, 5-4) halved the Cougar lead, 2-1.  Cuesta then took control of the game with five more runs before the end of the sixth inning.  VC struggled offensively, managing just six hits on the day.  Freshman Eric Contreras was 3-4 with an RBI and freshman Timmy Ginther had a hit, a stolen base, and scored the Pirates' lone run.  Freshman Matt Burke also had a pair of hits for VC.   READ MORE... 

Pirates Compete at SBCC Relays

 T&F   3-23-2012  The Pirate track and field teams traveled to the Santa Barbara City College Easter Relays on Friday with Bennie Kirkwood and Tevin Jones Capturing gold, winning the high jump and hammer thorw, respectively.  Amber Panapa claimed the silver medal in the discus and Garrett Baker finished second in the 300m steeplechase.  VC also claimed second in the men's 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter relays. READ MORE... 

M & W Swim Teams Win Quad

 Swim  3-23-2012  The Ventura College men's and women's swimming teams dominated their third Western State Conference meet of the season, winning both meets handily at the quad meet hosted by LA Valley.  The Pirate women (8-0) earned 115 points to Santa Monica's second-place total of 54.  Meanwhile the VC men (8-0) totaled 103 points, followed by Santa Monica (68).  Henry Chung set a new school record in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 20.33 and he also won the 200 yard backstroke.  Tyler Kasik was also a double-winner in the 200 yard butterfly and 500 yard freestyle.  Jessie Ball (200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle) and Gabby Romero (50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle) were double winners for the women.  READ MORE... 

Pirates Outlast Raiders, 9-8

 Base  3-22-2012  Using a six-run third inning, the Ventura College baseball team held off the Moorpark Raiders 9-8 in Western State Conference play at the VC Baseball Complex Thursday.  Freshman Joey Contreras started on the mound for VC (14-8, 5-3), battling through 5 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs, four of which were earned, picking up the victory.  Freshman Jacob Murray picked up the save, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning, and throwing the final three frames.  Freshman Matt Burke led the offense with two hits, including a double, and two walks with three RBI, one run scored, and a stolen base.  READ MORE... 

Pirates Clinch Tie With Win

Pirate Women Clinch WSC Tie

 WTen  3-22-2012 Continuing their season-long dominance, the Pirates' women's tennis team clinched at least a share of the Western State Conference crown with a 7-2 win over Glendale Thursday at the VC Tennis Center.  VC (13-0, 6-0) swept the three doubles matches and won four of the six singles contests to remain unbeaten on the season.  Julianna Bacelar (No. 1), Jessica Worring (No. 2), Sonia Landeros (No. 3) and Layne Gallimore (No. 4) all posted singles victories, with the four teaming up to win the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, as well.  Carolyn Morris and Katie Power were also victorious in their No. 3 doubles match. SB Victorious Over Hancock

 SB   3-22-2012  Leaving little doubt from the outset, the Pirates' softball team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 15-1 victory over Allan Hancock College Thursday at the VC Softball Complex.  Teresa Lemos pitched the first three innings, recording her 13th win of the season against two defeats and Danielle Saleh pitched the final two frames for her fifth save.  Offensively, Jennifer Moreno led the way, going 2-3 with a triple and four RBI while Katrina Gutierrez was 1-2 with a triple. VC Wins Make-Up Game Over OC

 Base  3-21-2012  The Ventura College baseball team bounced back from their walk-off loss Tuesday with a 7-4 victory over Oxnard on Wednesday afternoon at the VC Baseball Complex.  Ventura (13-8, 4-3) broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in the sixth inning in the victory.  Sophomore Dustin Babola pitched 7 2/3 solid innings to pick up the win, while Freshman Timmy Ginther was 1-2 on the day but had two walks, scored two runs, and had an RBI on a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded that ultimately resulted in three Pirate runs following a throwing error.  Sophomore Scott Zeman had three hits in the game.   READ MORE...

 SB   3-20-2012  The Pirates' softball team swept a double header at Los Angeles Pierce College Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Brahmas 12-1 and 16-0.  Teresa Lemos and Danielle Saleh pitched complete game wins for Ventura (16-3, 6-0).  Candice Garcia had five hits in the two games, including a home run, while Raelene Moreno and Cheyenne Barrios also smacked home runs.  As a team Ventura had 15 hits in the first game and 13 hits in the second.    READ MORE...

 MTen  3-20-2012 With the match going down to the final pairing in No. 3 doubles, the Pirate team of Jonathan Lin and Paulo Fernandes delivered.  The duo won their match 9-7, sealing a 5-4 Ventura victory over the Vaqueros in Santa Barbara beginning the second round of Western State Conference play.  Dylan Cleary and Cameron Lee were victorious in No. 2 doubles while Fernandes (No. 4), Eder Giotto (No. 5), and Tyler Sperry (No. 6) were all winners in singles matches.  The win gives the Pirates a two-match edge over SBCC with three WSC matches remaining.  READ MORE...

Pirates Drop Walk-Off

 Base  3-20-2012  The Pirates' baseball team dropped a heartbreaker in walk-off fashion Tuesday afternoon, falling to Moorpark 4-3, surrendering a one run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning.  Freshman Jared Patterson led the VC offense with two hits and stole a base while freshman Eric Contreras knocked in a pair of runs with a hit.  Sophomore Dennis Doherty started on the mound for VC, scattered three hits over six innings, allowing two runs, one earned before exiting.  READ MORE... 

Golf Claims Third at N/S Cup

 Golf   3-19-2012  The Pirates' men's golf team claimed third place at the North / South Cup hosted by Santa Barbara City College at Hunter Ranch Golf Club.  Under very cold and intermittent rain the Pirates struggle to their third place finish of the eight participating teams on the par 72 course in Paso Robles.  In this two day tournament Chabot College of Hayward was first with a total score of 743, followed by Glendale with a 749.  Ventura claimed third place with a team score of 773.  Andrew Garcia led VC with a two-day score of 148 (77-71) followed by Chad McLay, (80-71 - 151), Jordan Thomas (74-81 - 155), Timmy Snyder (80-81 - 161), and Roman Barnes (80-80 - 163).  READ MORE...

Softball, W Swim Earn Academic Honors

3-19-2012 The California Community College Athletic Association announced its academic awards for the 2010-11 year last month, and the Ventura College Pirates were named the State Scholar team for both Women's Swimming and Softball.  The 2011 Women's Swimming and Diving team had 18 team members and posted an overall grade point average of 3.20.  Each student athlete averaged 15.1 units (12.0 units is considered full-time).  Meanwhile the Pirate Softball team achieved a team GPA of 3.11 and each of the 12 student athletes completed an average of 14.4 units.  READ MORE...

Record-Breaking Success for VC's Swimming Teams

 Swim  3-17-2012 From the Ventura County Star  With seven straight seasons in the top 3 at the state meet, including state championships in 2005 and 2010, competing for the ultimate honors has become an annual rite of spring for the Ventura College men's swimming team.  Although, this spring, it looks like it will have some company.  By winning the annual Cuesta Invitational last weekend, when it topped the teams that have won the past four state titles, the Ventura College women's swimming team also showed it can compete on the state level.  READ MORE... 

Pirates Battle Huskers

 MTen  3-15-2012 Taking advantage of a rare opportunity, the Ventura College men's tennis team battled the University of Nebraska on Friday at the VC Tennis Center, falling 9-0 to the Huskers after giving a solid effort.  In doubles, Dylan Cleary and Cameron Lee (No. 1) along with Jonathan Lin and Paulo Fernandes (No. 2) both fought hard before falling 8-5 to their NCAA Division I opponents.  Meanwhile Tyler Sperry and Nick Bezzubchenko fell victim of the depth of the Big 10 school, 8-2 in No. 3 doubles.  In singles competition,  Lee (No. 3) pushed his opponent to a tiebreaker in the first set and Fernandes (No. 4) won five games in the first set.   READ MORE...

LaFountain HM All-American

 WBB   3-16-2012  Pirate sophomore Destinee LaFountain has become the ninth player in team history to earn All-American honors, earning an honorable mention nod on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association list for 2011-12.  LaFountain, the California State co-Player of the Year, led VC (32-2) to their 22nd consecutive Western State Conference title and into the State Final Four.  She averaged 12.4 points and 11.0 rebounds, both team highs, becoming the first Pirate since 1992-93 to average a double-double for two years.  READ MORE...

Pirates Sweep Raiders in SB

Swimmers 1st, 2nd at Cuesta

 Swim  3-10-2012  The Ventura College women's swim team accomplished something that has alluded them for 36 years - winning the annual Cuesta Invitational.  The Pirate women won the final race of the event, and runner-up Orange coast finished fourth as VC edged the Pirates of the South 550-549 to finish first in the 19-team field that included last year's state champions and state runner-up.  Gaby Romero turned in a record-setting performance to lead Ventura.  Meanwhile, the Pirate men finished a distant second to Santa Rosa in their 18-team field, but ahead of 2011 state champion Orange Coast.  Henry Chung also had a record setting performance in leading the Pirates.  READ MORE... 

VC Baseball Wins 5-4 at SBCC

 Base  3-10-2012The Pirates ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory at Santa Barbara City College Saturday afternoon in conference action.  VC jumped out to an early lead for the third straight contest, but this time made it stand up against the Vaqueros.   Sophomore Dennis Doherty allowed three runs over seven innings for his first victory of the season while Scott Zeman picked up his third save.  Dewey Grattan fell a double short of hitting for the cycle, batting 4-5 in the contest, leading Ventura (10-7, 1-2) on offense.   READ MORE... 

Offense Leaves VC at Final Four

 WBB  3-9-2012 The fates can be cruel.  The Ventura College women’s basketball team was a group who found a knack of winning close games.  With an outstanding defense and an offense that always found a way to get the job done, they had won all 11 contests this season that were close down the stretch, until Friday.  With their offense struggling, the Pirate defense was great again, giving VC a chance down the stretch in the State Final Four against Foothill, at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento.  Rebecca Griffin hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 remaining in the game, bringing Ventura to within two points, 42-40, but they would get no closer, falling in the state semifinal 49-43.  Griffin netted a game-high 14 points and Destinee LaFountain pulled down 24 rebounds with seven points, as the Pirates closed their season with a stellar 32-2 record.   READ MORE...

VC 2nd, 3rd at WSC Home Meet

 T&F   3-9-2012  The VC track and field teams hosted five other Western State Conference schools in a six-way meet on Friday at the VC Sportsplex, with positive results for both the men's and women's teams.  The Pirate women scored 116.5 points, finishing in second behind Canyons (180 points) and ahead of third place Cuesta (99.5).  Meanwhile the men earned the bronze finish with 104.5 points, behind Canyons (147) and Bakersfield (134).  Tara Johnson and Kenosha Grier led the VC women and Phillip Hanley and LaKeith Murray turned in solid performances for the Ventura men.  READ MORE...

 WBB   3-9-2012  From the Ventura County Star  Stephanie Ramirez's shooting form is captured in silhouette, shrouded by the dark, empty gymnasium while a rounded blur hurtles toward the rim.  The Ventura College sophomore was in the middle of a marathon one-woman, three-hour shooting session last fall — following a two-hour practice, no less — when a friendly passerby snapped the photo that adorns her Twitter account.  In its tiny corner of cyberspace, the snapshot is a symbol of why the Ventura College women's basketball team is one of only four teams still playing this weekend, while 84 others have cleaned out their lockers.  READ MORE...

State Final Four a Predictable Bunch

 WBB   3-9-2012  From the Ventura County Star  If Brian Critchlow had taken the time to fill out a bracket, chances are he'd have a big lead in his CCCAA women's basketball office pool right now.  "These were the teams that I picked early on," said the Mount San Antonio head coach. VC Swimmers Dominate Quad

 Swim  3-8-2012  The Pirates' men's and women's swimming and diving teams both dominated a quad meet Thursday at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.  The VC men racked up 71 points, finishing well ahead of Cuesta (23), American River (22) and Bakersfield (11).  Meanwhile, the VC women had even a better day, with 88 points as compared to Cuesta (23), Bakersfield 911) and American River (7).  Gaby Romero posted a pair of first place finishes in the 50 yard butterfly and 50 yard freestyle, in addition to anchoring the victorious 200 yard medley relay.  Lai Yeong Chung led the men, winning the 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle, and opening the 200 yard medley relay.  READ MORE...  See VC Meet Results...

Pirates Fall at Hancock

 Base  3-8-2012 In an alarming trend, the Pirate baseball team lost another contest late, giving up eight runs in the final three innings thanks to poor defense, falling 9-3 to the Bulldogs.  Joey Contreras threw six great innings, allowing just one run, before the Pirate defense failed him in Hancock's five-run seventh frame.  VC (9-7, 0-2) also struggled offensively, managing only five hits in the game.  Scott Zeman hit a solo home run for Ventura. READ MORE... 

VC Sweeps Bakersfield, 9-0

 WTen  3-8-2012 The VC women's tennis team stretched their season-opening winning streak to 10 matches with their 9-0 sweep of Bakersfield College Thursday afternoon at the VC Tennis Center.  Julianna Bacelar won her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-1, while Jessica Worring (No. 2) and Layne Gallimore (No. 4) only lost three games in their singles matches, respectively.  Sonia Landeros (No. 3) and Carolyn Morris (No. 5) each won 6-1, 6-1.  The Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams each won 8-1 for VC (10-0, 4-0).  MTen  3-8-2012 The Ventura College men's tennis team continued its assault on the Western State Conference with a 9-0 victory at Bakersfield College Tuesday afternoon.  Eder Giotto (No. 4), Felipe De Paulo (No. 5), and Jonathan Malta (No. 6) all swept their singles matches, 6-0, 6-0, and Paulo Fernandes (No. 3) won 6-0, 6-1.  Dylan Cleary 9No. 2) won 6-0, 7-5, while Jonathan Lin (No. 1) was victorious 6-2, 6-0.  VC (8-1, 4-0) also swept all three doubles matches. VC Opens WSC vs. Oxnard

 SB   3-8-2012  The Pirates' softball team opened Western State Conference play Thursday with a 3-1 win against Oxnard College at the VC softball complex.  The Pirates opened the game with a 1-0 lead before the Condors evened the score in the top of the sixth inning.  VC (11-3, 1-0) answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth frame for the victory.  Teresa Lemos pitched the win and Raelene Moreno provided the big hit with a two-run home run to right field providing the game-winning runs.  MTen  3-6-2012 The Pirates' men's tennis team moved to 3-0 in Western State Conference play with a 6-3 decision over Los Angeles Pierce College Tuesday afternoon in Woodland Hills.  Eder Giotto (No. 5) and Cameron Lee (No. 3) won their singles matches in straight sets while Dylan Cleary (No. 2) and Paulo Fernandes (No. 4) each won singles matches in three sets.  Meanwhile  VC won the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches, Nick Bezzubchenko and Cameron Lee, and Jonathan Lin and Giotto, respectively, to clinch the contest.  READ MORE...

Baseball Opens WSC Play

 Base  3-6-2012 The Ventura College baseball team opened Western State Conference North Division play at home Tuesday, falling to Allan Hancock College 6-4.  The Pirates (9-6, 0-1) took an early lead, but were not able to hold on as the Bulldogs rallied for the win.  Scott Zeman had a pair of hits for VC with an RBI and Matt Burke also belted two safeties on the day, including a double.

Pirates Win SBCC Invite

 Golf   3-5-2012  The Ventura College men's golf team earned its first won its first tournament of the season, finishing first of 10 competing teams at the two-day, 36-hole Santa Barbara Invitational Sunday and Monday.  Teams teed up at the par-72 Marshalia Ranch Golf Club on Sunday, finishing at the par-72 La Purisma Golf Club on Monday.  VC won the tournament with a team score of 768 followed by Glendale (780) and Santa Barbara (784).  Chad McLay and Andy Stanfield  were the low individuals, each posting two-day totals of 152 while Andrew Garcia carded a 153.  Tim Snyder (155), Roman Barnes (158), and Jordan Thomas (158) rounded out the Pirate scorers.  READ MORE...

LaFountain, Griffin Honored

 WBB   3-5-2012  Ventura College sophomores Destinee LaFountain and Rebecca Griffin have been honored by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association on its All-State Teams.  LaFountain, a 6-foot-1 forward was named the State Co-Player of the Year and Griffin was named second-team All-State by the Coaches at a meeting last month.  Both are anchors of the Pirate team that sits at 32-1 with a state Final Four game against Foothill College looming this Friday, March 9, at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm and it can be heard live on www.HomeFieldSports.com.   READ MORE...

Pirates Advance to Final Four

 WBB  3-3-2012 Behind one of the more dominating individual performances in program history, the Ventura College women's basketball team advanced to the State Final Four with a 64-47 SoCal Regional Final victory over San Bernardino Valley College Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center.  Rebecca Griffin scored 23 of her game-high 25 points in the second half, hitting three 3-pointers in the period in addition to a perfect 6-6 performance at the free throw line down the stretch to put the game on ice.  Destinee LaFountain had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Rian Mew hit for 10 points with four assists as Ventura (32-1) advanced to it's state record 13th state final four.   READ MORE...

VC Track Prepares For Home Meet

 T&F   3-3-2012  The Ventura College Men's and women's track and field teams prepped for their Western State Conference opener at home next week by traveling to Cerritos College over the weekend, participating in the Beach Invitational sponsored by Long beach State University.  Competing against both two and four-year colleges, Long Beach State, Cal State Los Angeles and USC to name a few, the Pirates fared well, bringing home many first place finishes in their respective heats and posting more seasonal and personal best marks. Pirate Win Streak Ends

 Base  3-3-2012  It is said that all good things must come to and end, and so it is with the Pirates' seven game winning streak, as they dropped a tough contest to Mt. San Antonio College 9-6 Saturday at the VC Baseball Complex.  The Pirates were undone by shaky defense, committing five errors on the day with four hit batters aiding the 11 hits for the Mounties used to collect their nine runs to knock off the Pirates.  Freshman Eric Contreras had three hits for the Pirates, driving in all six of VC's runs.    READ MORE...

10 Pirates on Scholar-Athlete List

 FB  3-1-2012 Ten Pirates have been honored by the Southern California Football Association on its 2011 SCFA Scholar Athlete List.  Colin Cheatham and his 3.68 grade point average led VC's honorees on the list, which also included Tim Vizzi, Esa Johnwell, Kenjay Trueblood, Kordarius Rice, Joe Reynoso, Kalvin Cruz, Dezerick Reed, Earnest Hall, and Damien Taylor.  Honorees must have completed two years of eligibility and completed at least 36 units of coursework with a  minimum of a 3.0 GPA.  Ventura's list of 10 ranks the team tied for third in the number of honorees in Southern California.  Santa Ana had 14 players on the list, followed by Fullerton with 13.  VC and Saddleback each listed 10 honorees.  READ MORE...

Softball Victorious at Mission

 SB   3-1-2012  The Ventura College softball team resumed action with an 11-5 win at Los Angeles Mission College in Sylmar Thursday afternoon.  VC used five-run innings in the first two frames to take control of the game, while pitcher Teresa Lemos threw eight strikeouts to pace Ventura (10-3).  Offensively, Jennifer Moreno paced the Pirates with three hits, including two doubles, and four RBI.  Katrina Gutierrez was 2-2 with three RBI and Candice Garcia pounded three hits, including two doubles.  READ MORE...

VC Pounds LA Valley 15-6

 Base  3-1-2012  The juggernaut that is the Pirate baseball team continues to roll as VC racked up its seventh straight victory 15-6 over los Angels valley College Thursday at the VC Baseball Complex.  The Ventura offense racked up 15 hits on the day with five going for extra bases.  Eight of the nine Pirates in the line up collected hits and all nine reached base safely at least once.  Sophomore Collin Boys led the attack with four hits, scoring three times and driving in two runs, while  freshman Jared Patterson collected three hits, stole a base, scored two runs, and had two RBI.  Freshman Joey Contreras picked up his third win of the season on the mound for VC (9-4).  READ MORE... 

WBB Reaches Elite Status

 WBB  2-29-2012  If one thing doesn't work, try another.  With the Pirates' State Co-Player of the Year Destinee LaFountain limited on the offensive end with an arm injury, VC want a different route, the long distance way, as Carlotta Kloppenburg sank five 3-pointers en route to 20 points, leading No. 2 Ventura to a 59-48 SoCal regional semifinal win over No. 10 Cypress Wednesday night at the Athletic Event Center.  Rian Mew had 12 points, including a 10-14 performance at the free throw line, and four assists as the Pirates (31-1) advanced to the state Elite Eight for a record 15th time.  They will host No. 3 San Bernardino Valley in the regional finals Saturday at 7:00 pm. VC Fights the Good Fight in Loss

 MBB  2-29-2012  Despite a valiant effort, the No. 12 Ventura College men's basketball team could not muster another playoff upset, falling 79-71 at No. 4 San Bernardino Valley College Wednesday night in the SoCal Regional Semifinals.  Sophomore Corey Hall played his heart out, as did all of the Pirates, grabbing 21 rebounds and scoring 18 points to lead a team effort in the contest.  Sophomore Austin Ramljak had 14 points while freshmen Joseph Soto and Zalmico Harmon netted 17 and 12 points, respectively.    READ MORE...
