Pirates
Eliminated In Extras
SB
5-8-2011
From the Ventura County Star
The Ventura College softball team pushed No. 3
Riverside into extra innings Sunday afternoon. But
the No. 14-seeded Pirates could not push the
best-of-3 first-round series to a decisive third
game. Freshman Chelsea Ponce pitched Riverside's
first no-hitter in 10 years, striking out nine, as
Riverside completed the two-game sweep with a 2-1
win in nine innings at the Evans Complex in
Riverside. Ventura (23-17) took the lead in the
bottom of the first inning, when it earned its only
four baserunners of the game to score its only run
of the pressure-packed meeting series.
Danielle Markmann and
Teresa Lemos drew walks and
Clarissa Samaniego was hit by a pitch with the
bases loaded to force Markmann in from third base.
The Pirates held the lead until the top of the
third, when Riverside catcher Lindsay Monk tied the
game with a solo home run to center field.
