The Pirates' men's swim team
gave it all they had, trailing first place
Orange Coast by 74 points heading into
Saturday's final day at the state swimming
and diving championships at East Los Angeles
College. With three events remaining,
they trimmed the deficit to 31 points,
maintaining a shot at defending their 2010
state title. The Pirates from the
south, however, were too strong in the end,
and Ventura finished the championships in
second place with 480 points compared to
OCC's 522. The finish continued VC's
streak of finishing in first or second place
in the state in six of the past seven years.
(In 2009 Ventura finished third).
Meanwhile, the VC women totaled 119 points
for a 14th place finish in the state's
premier event.

From the Ventura County Star
The Ventura College men's
swimming team defended its state title until
the final swim, but not even a valiant push
on the final day of the California Community
College championships at East Los Angeles
College was enough. The Pirates used
several big performances to reduce Orange
Coast's big lead to 31 points with three
events remaining, before settling for second
place, 522-480 on Saturday. Ventura has
been either the state champion or runner up
in six of the past seven seasons. The only
other year, 2009, it was third. "It was one
of our best state championship
performances," said Baratte. "We just came
up against a stronger team." With 551
points, Orange Coast also won the women's
meet. Ventura finished 14th with 119 points.

From the Ventura County Star
For 15 minutes, Steven
Tennant sat behind the blocks, staring at
the water and picturing the best swim of his
life. Nearly four years after his previous
championship meet, the VC freshman completed
his comeback with not one, but two
championship swims Friday night at the state
championships at East LA College. Tennant
won the state title in the 100-yard
backstroke and anchored VC's state
record-setting 800 freestyle relay. The
quartet of Eric Donahoo, Erik Renspiess,
Collin Baratte and Tennant cruised to
victory in 6:43.32, more than six seconds
ahead of second-place Diablo Valley and
almost a second better than the previous
record, set by Orange Coast in 2009. The
performance pulled defending champion
Ventura into second place after two days of
the three-day meet, within 74 points of
leader Orange Coast. READ MORE...

From the Ventura County
Star Lisa Simmons is a
competitor, so it bothered her when Sierra's
Molly Swartz tipped her for the state
championship in women's 1-meter diving at
the California Community College
championships Thursday afternoon at East Los
Angeles College. But, considering she is
only in her second year of diving, the
Ventura College freshman was proud of her
accomplishment. With 204.75 points,
compared to Swartz's 220.80, the Southern
California champion confirmed her title by
being the region's top finisher. They will
go head-to-head again today in the 3-meter
event. Seeking to defend its state team
title, the Ventura College men's swimming
team fell behind leader Orange Coast,
188-119. The Pirates are in third place
after the first day of the three-day meet,
trailing second-place Santa Rosa by 13
points.
