Topic 2 - 2.1 -- Algebraic Expressions
Simplify:
7b + 10 + 3b - 17 Use the commutative property to put the same terms
7b + 3b + 10 - 17 next to each other.
10b + (-7) Combine like terms, add the numerical coefficients
10b - 7 algebraically.
4(x + 5) - 3x(y + 3) Remove the parenthesis, use the distributive property.
4x + 20 -3xy - 9x Combine like terms.
-5x - 3xy + 20
4b(a + 5) - 7a - 2(3ab - b²) Remove parenthesis
4ab + 20b - 7a - 6ab + 3b² Combine like terms.
-7a - 2ab + 20b + 3b²
Answers should be in alphabetical order with the largest exponent of the variable that
comes first in the alphabet at the beginning.
Evaluate:
3a² - 7a - 6b a = -3, b = 11 Substitute the corresponding number for the
3(-3)² - 7(-3) - 6(11) valuable and simplify.
3(9) - (-21) - 66
27 + 21 - 66
48 - 66
-18
3x³ - 6xy - 5xz + 4z - 1 x = 2, y = -4, z = 7
3(2)³ - 6(2)(-4) - 5(2)(7) + 4(7) - 1
3(8) - 12(-4) - 10(7) + 28 - 1
24 - (-48) - 70 + 28 - 1
24 + 48 - 70 + 28 - 1
