SPRING 2009 LEARNING COMMUNITY:
THE AMERICAN DEMOCRATIC EXPERIMENT AND YOU

This spring, Dr. Robert Porter will be teaming up with Dr. Sara Gallaway from the History Department to team-teach a learning community course called "The American Democratic Experiment and You". The class is from 9am-noon on Tue and Thur and meets in MAC 201. You will have to enroll in both POLS V01 (American Government) and HIST 07A (American History). Check the online schedule of classes for more info. You will receive credit for 3 units of American Government and 3 units of American History as part of this learning community. We will be using the same syllabus, same books and team-teaching the course with a focus on self exploration and experiential learning. The texts for the two courses are:

Landy and Milkis, American Government: Balancing Democracy and Rights. Second Edition. Cambridge University Press
Faragher, et.al. Out of Many: A History of the American People. Fifth Edition, Teaching and Learning Classroom Edition. Pearson/Prentice Hall
John Bryant, ed. American Literature (Selections by Dr. Sara Gallaway and Dr. Robert Porter). Pearson. ISBN: 13-978-0-558-09473-7

All books are available at the VC bookstore and the last two are bundled together by Pearson to save you some money. If you have any questions about enrolling in this Spring 'Learning Community', please email Dr. Robert Porter at rporter@vcccd.edu or call me at 654-6400 ext. 2471
