SPRING 2009

--I will be teaching a Learning Community course called "The American Democratic Experiment and You" with Dr. Sara Gallaway from the History Department. The Learning Community requires students to concurrently enroll in a section of American Government and American History (Hist07A). We will be exploring the nature of American democracy over time with a special emphasis on the themes of individualism vs community, freedom vs equality, and exploring the role of the individual in a democracy. The course will involve a self exploration project where students reflect on their identity as "Americans" and what this means as well as lots of experiential interactive work in the classroom. Check the schedule of classes for more info. or email me at rporter@vcccd.edu. You can also call me at 805-654-6400 x-2471.

--We will be offering POLS V01 and POLS V03 as regular and online courses. These are our basic survey courses and meet both History/Institutions Requirements as well as the CSU State and Local Government requirement. They are interchangeable courses, although POLS V03 is a broader survey course that covers many of the subfields in political science, not just American Government. If you are thinking about being a public school teacher, you should take POLS V01 as this is required.

--We will also be offering POLS V02 online. I will be teaching this Comparative Government class online and this is one of the core lower division courses for political science  majors as well as one of the core requirements for our International Studies Degree at VC. This class focuses on the history, culture, geography, and politics of various countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, China, Nigeria, and Mexico. For more info. on this class, contact Dr. Robert Porter

--We will also be offering POLS V05 as a regular course. This section of International Relations will be offered by Dr. Farzeen Nasri and is another one of the core lower division courses required of political science majors. This is also the other core course for VC's International Studies degree. For more info. on this course, contact Dr. Nasri at fnasri@vcccd.edu or call him at 805-654-6400 ext.1217

--Dan Gonzalez will be offering a 1/2 unit service learning course for students enrolled in his section of POLS V03 (Intro to Political Science). Check the schedule of classes for more information.
