Hello and welcome to Ventura College's International
Studies Program. This program is designed to prepare students for a rapidly changing
global economy full of opportunities and challenges. As California's economy becomes more
integrated with Asia and Latin America, for example, knowledge of these countries'
politics, economics, and cultures will be a valuable asset for job seekers in the future.
As more and more of our state's economy becomes geared around these newly expanding export
markets, a deeper knowledge of their history and language will give students the edge they
need to succeed in a competitive job market.
The program is an inter-disciplinary one, allowing students to choose among subfields they
are interested in. There are core courses as well as a menu of classes to choose from
within each subfield. In addition, there are two required courses that must be taken:
Introduction to International Relations (Political Science 5) and Introduction to
Comparative Politics (Political Science 2). Both of these courses are taught each semester
and will give you a foundation for understanding the changing nature of today's global
politics and economics. From here, many students choose an area of the world to focus on,
be it Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, etc. There are also some thematic subfields to
choose from, including diplomacy, communications, business, etc. For more information on
the subfields and required classes, see the section on required courses.
