Ventura 74, Saddleback College 50

Jan. 3, 2004

  BOX SCORE

After a long winter's break, the Ventura College Pirates took a while to get going against Saddleback College, the state's 12th ranked team.  But after a few minutes of warm-up time, VC got things going and cruised to a 74-50 victory in their final tune-up before beginning Western State Conference North Division play next week.

The Gauchos (10-4) started fast, building a 15-7 lead on Ventura eight minutes into the game.  However, a 19-3 run by the Pirates, capped by two Courtney Young 3-pointers sandwiched around a Kristine Gleisberg field goal in the final minute of the run, gave VC (13-3) a 26-18 advantage at the 6:38 point of the first half.  The Pirates led going into intermission 36-27.  The second half played out fairly even for the first few minutes.  Saddleback closed the gap to seven, 46-39, with 13:59 remaining, and the Pirate bench pushed the lead back to 12, 51-39, on a Trisha Kawasaki trifecta with 13:30 remaining in the contest.  The Gauchos made one last run, cutting the lead to eight points, 51-43, but Kimberly Kawasaki closed out another Pirate run with a 3-pointer, giving VC a 58-45 advantage with 9:25 on the clock.  The Pirate reserves rallied down the stretch, giving Ventura the 74-50 win.

Young led all scorers with 19 points, 15 in the first half, and also pulled down eight rebounds while dishing out four assists.  Gleisberg had 14 points with eight boards and three blocked shots, and Rachael Kolbeck played a steady game, scoring 10 points with seven rebounds.  Sascha Pack grabbed six boards and handed out four assists.

Ventura opens up conference play on Wednesdy Jan. 7 by hosting Cuesta College at the Athletic Event Center.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm and the VC men's game will follow at 7:30pm.
