Ventura 62, Sequoias 56 Dec. 21, 2004; Ventura Crossover
The Pirates used a 9-0 run in the game's final 2 minutes turning a one point deficit into an eight point advantage en route to a 62-56 decision over #17 College of the Sequoias. Ventura (8-6), ranked #13 in the latest state poll, will host #12 Cypress College in a playoff rematch on Wednesday Dec. 22 at 7:00 pm in the Athletic Event Center, while Sequoias will battle Oxnard in the other half of the Ventura Crossover. The Pirates jumped out early on the Giants (8-4), taking an 11-3 lead just five minutes into the game. VC could not sustain the run, however, as Sequoias battled back to tie the score at 20 with 6:13 remaining in the half. COS took a 24-20 lead over the next two minutes before a Sheana Triana 3-pointer and a Marie Ayala jumper gave VC back the advantage, 25-24. The Pirates led at the intermission, 33-28. VC could not pull away in the second half, as the Giants hung tough with a distinct advantage on the boards, 43-35. Ventura went up 43-40 on a Cassy Mata fast break lay-up at the 11:23 mark of the period before COS came back to grab a 46-45 advantage at the 7:45 point. Kristina Golden hit a shot to put the Pirates up 47-46 before a Giant 3-pointer put COS back up by two with 6:41 left in the game. Brittany Sheppard's two free throws tied the score at 49 before both teams went into a three minute scoring drought. The teams then traded buckest until the 2:53 mark when COS hit a free throw to go up by one, 54-53. When it mattered the most, the Pirates turned up the defense and used excellent offensive execution and rebounding to go on its decisive run. Sascha Pack hit a charity toss to tie the score with 2:30 remaining in the game and Sheppard hit one of two free throws with 1:36 left. Marie Ayala rebounded the Sheppard miss and after a time-out, the Pirates ran an inbounds play to Sheppard for a lay-up and a 57-54 advantage. After a defensive stop, Triana hit Pack on a designed back-door play for a lay-up to put the Pirates out of reach, 59-54 with under a minute remaining. The Pirates sank free throws to settle the final score at 62-56. Triana led the Pirate scoring with 12 points while Sheppard and Shannon Antunez each contributed 10 and Pack netted nine points. Triana grabbed 6 rebounds and Sheppard pulled down five. Pack had four assists and Rebecca Kolbeck grabbed three steals. Thr Pirates return to action Wednesday Dec. 22 at 7:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center hosting #12 Cypress College. The game is a rematch of last year's second-round playoff game in which Cypress defeated VC 72-67 ending the Pirates' 19-game home playoff winning streak and VC's run of 10 consecutive State Final Four appearances. The Pirates will then break for Christmas before returning to the hardwoods January 5, 2005 against cross-county rival Moorpark College.
