Ventura 62, Cypress 72 Dec. 22, 2004; Ventura Crossover
Ventura closed out its pre-conference schedule with a 72-62 loss against #12 Cypress College in the Ventura Crossover Tournament at the Athletic Event Center. The Pirates, ranked #13 in the state, held a 54-47 advantage with 8:57 left in the game but could not hold on down the stretch. The first half was played evenly with both teams holding small leads. Cypress (8-2) led 4-0 before VC used 3-pointers by Sheana Triana, Shannon Antunez, and Marie Ayala, respectively, to take a a 9-8 lead four minutes into the contest. Ventura (8-7) led 20-17 at the 8:11 mark before a five minute scoring drought allowed the Chargers to go on a 6-0 run to take back control of the game. Cypress led at halftime 29-27. The Pirates opened the second half on fire, outscoring the Chargers 8-0 in the first two minutes. Krystal Perry scored six points during the run and Antunez added the other two, giving VC a 35-29 advantage. Cypress scored the next seven points, however to regain the lead 36-35. Consecutive 3-pointers by Ayala and Brittany Sheppard gave the Pirates a 41-36 margin and Antunez hit another trifecta with 13:47 left in the game to complete VC's 9-2 run, making the Pirate advantage six points once again, 44-38. Three minutes later with just under nine minutes remaining, Sascha Pack hit a 3-pointer giving VC its biggest lead of the game 54-47. The Chargers turned that around with a 12-0 run over then next three minutes, taking the lead for good. The Pirates could muster only eight more points of offense and did not score in the final 2:30 of the game before falling 72-62. Sheppard led the Pirates with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Pack scored 12 with seven assists. Ayala netted 11 points with five boards and Rebecca Kolbeck also grabbed five rebounds. Ventura takes two weeks off for the Christmas and New Year's holiday before returning to the court on January 5 at home against Moorpark in the WSC-North opener. Game time is scheduled for 7:30pm in the Athletic Event Center.
