Ventura 60, El Camino 53

Jan. 15, 2005

  BOX SCORE

The 13th-ranked Pirates defeated 18th-ranked El Camino College 60-53 in their final non-conference game of the season at the Athletic Event Center.  VC used a hot shooting hand in the first half, and stingy defense in the second, and shot a season-best 77 percent from the foul line (17-22) to win their fourth game in a row.

The game began slowly with both teams unable to put many points on the board.  El Camino (11-6) scored first on a 3-pointer followed by consecutive baskets by Ventura (12-7).  The Pirates led by as many as nine points in the opening stanza (28-19) before allowing the Warriors back into the game.  VC shot 13-28 (46 percent) in the half but committed 12 turnovers to help keep the game close.  The Pirates led at halftime, 31-26.

The Pirate defense stepped up yo begin the second period, not allowing an El Camino field goal for nearly 11 minutes.  The Warriors did connect on five free throws, while missing 15 field goal attempts during that span.  However, VC's offense could not take advantage of the situation, managing just 11 points of their own, building a 42-31 lead with nine minutes left in the game.  The Pirates stretched the advantage to 12 points before El Camino hit a 3-pointer late to close the gap to 60-53.

Shannon Antunez led the Pirates once again with 18 points and eight rebounds.  She also took two charges, which give her 28 for her career, a new school record.  (The previous record was 26 set by Monica Hang in 1999-2002.)  Rebecca Kolbeck had another solid effort with 15 points and five boards while Sascha Pack had five assists and five steals.  Yuri Inomata had three steals for VC.

Ventura resumes WSC-North play on Wednesday January 19 in Santa Maria against Allan Hancock College and returns home on Saturday January 22 versus Oxnard College.  Tip offs for both games are scheduled for 7:30 pm following the VC men's games, which are set for 5:30 pm.
