Ventura 69, @ Moorpark 67 Jan. 29, 2005; WSC-North
It was a tale of two halves when the Ventura traveled to Moorpark to begin the second round of WSC-North play. The Pirates (7-0, 16-7) persevered through massive foul difficulties in the first half to build a 25 point halftime advantage only to see that lead slip away in the final minutes of the game. VC managed to hit some free throws down the stretch to come away with the hard fought 69-67 triumph. The game was tight early with both teams taking turns holding the lead. With the score knotted at eight, Sheana Triana hit a 3-pointer to give the Pirates the advantage with 13:53 left in the half. VC would complete a 14-1 run over the next seven minutes to take control of the game. All the while, player after player headed to the Pirate bench with two fouls, a policy of coach Ned Mircetic when a player picks up the second foul in the first half. Ventura played the final 12 minutes of the half with just six players, Triana, Diana Nunez, Rebecca Kolbeck, Krystal Perry, Sascha Pack, and Yuri Inomata. With those six on the floor, VC outscored the Raiders 26-8 to take a 42-17 lead into the locker room. On the opening possession of the second half, Moorpark (4-3, 12-11) banked in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to begin their comeback. The Pirates were outscored 9-2 in the opening minutes of the half, but seemed to stop the bleeding rather quickly. Triana hit a bucket with 10:31 left in the game giving VC a 59-39 advantage, but the Pirates would manage only four free throws over the next seven minutes against the Raiders' 23 points. With 3:18 remaining, Moorpark hit one of two free throws to tie the score at 63. On the next possession, outran the Raider press and received a pass from Pack, converting it to two points and the Pirates recaptured the lead. After another Moorpark bucket, Kolbeck was fouled and calmly sank two free throws giving VC the lead for good. Triana was fouled with 1:19 remaining while grabbing a defensive rebound, and also hit two charity tosses, giving VC a 69-65 advantage. The Raiders hit one more bucket to pull within two, but could get no closer. After a scramble following a VC miss, Moorpark called timeout to set up their final play with 28 seconds left in the contest. Inomata's great defensive pressure on the ball forced the Raiders to misfire on a long 3-point attempt to win the game, but the Raiders were fouled in the ensuing scramble for the rebound, giving them a chance to tie with 2 seconds remaining. After missing the first free throw, Moorpark missed the second on purpose, and Kolbeck was there for the rebound to end the game and ice the VC win. Inomata led the VC attack once again with 17 points and three steals. Pack finished with 11 points, seven boards, and five assists while Kolbeck netted 10 points with seven rebounds. Triana led the team with eight rebounds. Ventura returns to the Athletic Event Center on Wednesday February 2 to take on Cuesta College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm following the VC men's game at 5:30 pm.
