Ventura 74, Moorpark 55 Jan. 5, 2005; WSC-North
The Pirates opened up Western State Conference play with a 74-55 victory over cross-county rival Moorpark College at the Athletic Event Center. The win was the 103rd consecutive conference triumph for Ventura (1-0, 9-7) dating back to 1995. It was also the 30th straight win over the Raiders (0-1, 9-9) dating back to the 1990-91 season. Both teams began the game with cold shooting as the score was tied at 2-2, three minutes into the contest. VC took control from there, however building a 12 point halftime advantage, 34-22, on the strength of Sheana Triana's 12 first-half points, nine coming on three 3-pointers. In the second period, VC built its lead to 13, 36-23 before the Raiders stormed back with a 10-2 run, bring the margin to five 38-33. Three-point baskets by Kristina Golden and Triana turned back the tide, giving the Pirates a double-digit lead they would not relenquish. Ventura won the game going away 74-55. Triana led the way with 19 points in the game to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Shannon Antunez scored 15 points and dished out another four assists. Sascha Pack contributed 10 points and Marie Ayala grabbed six rebounds and three steals. Tina Stetson had eight rebounds to lead the Pirates on the boards. The Pirates travel to San Luis Obispo on Saturday January 8 to take on the Cuesta Cougars in a WSC-North match up. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 as the contest follows the VC-Cuesta men's game at 5:30pm. The Pirates' next home game is Wednesday January 12 against Los Angeles Pierce College.
