Ventura 77, Oxnard 37 Jan. 22, 2005; WSC-North
All 11 Pirates scored at least four points as VC dismantled Oxnard College 77-37 in WSC-North play at the Athletic Event Center. The Pirates (5-0, 14-7) moved into first place alone in the conference win the win coupled with a Santa Barbara loss at LA Pierce. Ventura travels to face the Vaqueros in their next game. The Pirate defense started from the opening tip, forcing seven Condor turnovers in the first five minutes of the game. The offense failed to capitalize, however, as Ventura held a slight 7-2 lead at that point. A Tina Stetson bucket at the 10:59 mark of the half gave VC a 10 point advantage, 21-11 and the lead stayed around that margin until Kristina Golden hit two driving lay-ups on consecutive possessions, leading to an 8-2 Pirate run in the period's final four minutes. Ventura led at halftime 37-22. In the second half, Oxnard (0-5, 4-15) hit a free throw with 14:41 left to pull within 16 points, 44-28, before the Pirates put the Condors away with a 17-0 run over the next six minutes. Included in the run, sparked by the Pirates' trapping half court defense, were six points off the bench from Krystal Perry and two baskets each from Golden and Karla Martinez. For the game, VC's bench contributed 48 of the Pirates' 77 points. Ventura won the game going away, 77-37. Golden led the Pirates with 12 points on 6-8 shooting, five assists and three steals. Perry contributes 10 points and Sascha Pack came off the bench to score eight. Sheana Triana had eight boards to lead VC along with four steals. Shannon Antunez had four assists and a charge, bring her school-record career total to 31. The Pirates travel to Santa Barbara City College on Wednesday January 26 to take on the second-place Vaqueros.
