Ventura 77, Los Angeles Pierce 51 Jan. 12, 2005; WSC-North
Ventura dominated the boards in defeating Los Angeles Pierce College 77-51 in a WSC-North match up at the Athletic Event Center. The Pirates (3-0, 11-7) out-rebounded the Brahmas (0-2, 9-8), 55-40, despite being outsized at most positions on the floor. The game was physical from the beginning as Ventura scored six of its first 14 points from the foul line. The Pirates controlled the game from the beginning, but could never shake free of Pierce, who is much improved from past years. VC led 14-12, nearly nine minutes into the game when Sascha Pack hit a 3-pointer to send Ventura on a 16-3 run over the next six minutes. Pierce closed the gap to eight, 35-27, before VC closed the half with a four point run. The Pirates led at intermission 39-27. After the Pirates opened the half with a 7-2 run, both teams struggled offensively. Ventura building a 56-40 lead with 8:35 remaining in the contest, then closed the game strong with a 21-11 run, making the final score 77-51. Shannon Antunez led VC's scoring with 16 points, including a 12-14 performance at the free throw line. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Rebecca Kolbeck played arguably her best game of the season with a double-double of 15 points and 12 boards. She also connected on seven of 10 free throws. Yuri Inomata scored 11 points and Sheana Triana had 10 points with nine boards. Kolbeck also led the team with three assists. Ventura returns home on Saturday January 15 in a non-conference game with 18th ranked El Camino College. The barbeque fundraiser that was originally paired with the game has been rescheduled for February 12. The Pirates resume WSC-North play Wednesday January 19 at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria.
