Ventura 104, @ Santa Barbara 49

Jan. 26, 2005; WSC-North

  BOX SCORE

In what some billed as "a battle for first place," (SEE PHOTOS) the Pirates demonstrated that the top of the WSC-North standings is "Pirate Country" with a 104-49 rout of second-place Santa Barbara City College.  All eleven Pirates scored, and nine had at least six points as Ventura (6-0, 15-7) opened up a two-game lead on the Vaqueros (4-2, 9-12), who slipped to a second-place tie with Moorpark.

Yuri Inomata scored on a driving lay-up from the left wing to open the barrage from the Pirates on their first basket.  Following a Vaquero bucket, Inomata broke the tie with her second inside basket and VC would never look back.  Putting together 40 solid minutes of hard play, VC used it's attacking S.O.S. defense, as taught by retired NBA coach Bob Kloppenburg during the We Play Hard Coaching Clinic back in September , to lead to numerous fast-break opportunities.  In the half-court, the Pirates executed Tex Winter's triangle offense well to help establish it's top billing in the WSC-North.  Sascha Pack hit a lay-up with 10:57 left in the first half giving VC a 22-4 advantage.  Ventura's lead was 25, 39-14 at the 3:57 mark of the period when it exploded on a 12-3 run to close the half.  Ventura led at intermission 51-17.

The second half was merely a continuance of the Pirate dominance, with VC seemingly scoring on every possession.  The Vaqueros closed to with 35, 64-29, on its second consecutive 3-pointer when Kristina Golden answered with a long-range splash of her own from the right wing with 14:45 left in the contest.  When Santa Barbara scored on consecutive possessions with under seven minutes to play, Ventura reasserted its dominance by closing out the game on a 17-6 run, including a scoreless period for the Vaqueros from the 4:49 mark until they hit a basket with 4.7 seconds remaining, making the final score 104-49.

Inomata led the Pirate charge with 16 points, becoming the fifth VC player to lead the scoring column in six conference games.  Shannon Antunez scored 15 points to go along with four assists and Karla Martinez played her best game in the orange and black with 14 points and eight rebounds, including a 4-4 shooting night from the floor.  Sheana Triana hit on three of five 3-point attempts and netted 13 points to go along with her eight boards and four assists while Pack was the fifth Pirate in double-figures with 12 points augmented by five assists.  Marie Ayala also grabbed eight rebounds for VC.

Ventura begins the second-round of WSC-North play at Moorpark College on Saturday Jan. 29 with a 7;30 tip-off following the men's game at 5:30pm.  The Pirates return home Wednesday February 2 against Cuesta College.
