Ventura 64, San Jose 73

Nov. 28, 2004; 3rd Place Game, VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions

  BOX SCORE

Tina Stetson scored a career-high 10 points with six rebounds, but it was not enough as the Pirates fell to ninth-ranked San Jose City College 73-64 in the 3rd Place game of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions at the Athletic Event Center.  The loss drops Ventura to 1-4 on the young season heading to the always-tough Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias next weekend.

Both teams struggled to get going early, possibly a sign of fatigue after playing two games the previous two days.  San Jose (4-1) took an early 10-7 lead at the 11:35 point of the opening period.  VC came back to tie on a Shannon Antunez 3-pointer and took a 13-12 advantage on Stetson's old-fashioned 3-point play at the 9:30 mark.  Rebecca Kolbeck gave the Pirates their last lead of the game, 15-14, hitting a shot with 8:19 left in the stanza.  The Pirates experienced a scoring drought over the next four minutes and the Lady Jaguars went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game.  VC trailed at halftime, 34-28.

Antunez and Sheana Triana scored back-to-back buckets to open the second half pulling the Pirates to within two points, but the Lady Jags answered with a 7-0 run to keep the Pirates back.  Ventura made several other runs at San Jose, but were unable to catch the Jaguars, falling 73-64.

Antunez led VC's offense iwth 14 points while Kolbeck and Sascha Pack each added nine.  Pack dished out three assists and Triana added seven points and four assists.  Stetson's six boards led the team and Antunez grabbed five rebounds.  Krystal Perry and Triana each pulled in three steals in the game.

Ventura travels to Visalia next weekend, Dec. 2-5, to participate in the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias.  They will open with Solano College on Thursday at 3:30pm.  A date with either Cerritos or Sacramento looms on Friday for the Pirates.  This website will not be updated until Monday Dec. 6, so please check the Ventura County Star for results and game times.
