Ventura 70, @ Allan Hancock 44

January11, 2006

Box Score

When the Pirates arrived in Santa Maria for their game at Allan Hancock College, a fog was settling in over the community.  That fog remained over the VC offense for 20 minutes before the Pirates pulled away in the second half for a 70-44 win over the Lady Bulldogs.  VC shot just 25 percent (9-35) in the first half, building a six point advantage at halftime before hitting 53 percent (17-32) of their shots in the second period in the win.

Both teams opened the game slowly, as the Pirates (13-9, 2-1) could only muster a 5-4 lead with 16:34 remaining in the period.  The Lady Bulldogs (7-13, 1-1) went cold for the next 14 minutes of the contest, and VC managed to go on a slow and arduous 12-2 run over that span.  With a 17-6 lead on the board, Ventura failed to put Hancock away, and the Lady Bulldogs stormed back in the half's closing minutes, pulling to within four points, 21-17, with 24 seconds remaining.  Karla Martinez hit a basket with 11 seconds on the clock to give Ventura a 23-17 halftime lead.

Hancock missed their first seven shots of the second half, but the Pirates managed just two buckets over four-plus minutes, and the Pirate lead was 27-19 when the Lady Bulldogs got on the board with 15:38 remaining in the game.  Ventura slowly pulled away in the second half as Sandy Perry's 3-pointer with 6:06 remaining put the Pirates up 54-33.  Tina Stetson hit a bucket with 1:00 left to give VC a 70-40 lead before the Lady Bulldogs finished scoring the contest's final four points, securing the final score at 70-44.

Misty Alvarado led four Pirates in double-figures with 12 points.  Veronica Williams and Perry each scored 11 while Martinez contributed 10 to the balanced attack.  Martinez and Williams led the VC glass-attack with 8 rebounds each and Rebecca Kolbeck and Medina Britt each grabbed six boards.  Martinez also led the Pirates with five assists.

Ventura returns home on Saturday Jan. 14 to battle the Oxnard Condors.  Tip=off is scheduled for 5:30 pm at the Athletic Event Center and the game will be followed by the VC men at 7:30 pm.
