Box Score

Veronica Williams had her best game of the season with 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals; and the Pirate defense was suffocating in VC's 63-28 win over Los Angeles Pierce College at the Athletic Event Center.  The Pirate defense held the Brahmas to just 19 percent field goal shooting (9-47) while forcing 35 turnovers on the evening.

Ventura's (12-9, 1-1) offense sputtered out of the gate, but the defense was outstanding as Pierce  (10-10, 1-1) missed its first nine shots.  When the Brahmas did finally get on the baord with a field goal at the 14:35 mark, VC led 4-2.  The Pirates began a slow but steady march away from their opponents from that point on, as the lead grew steadily through the half.  Medina Britt hit a pair of free throws with 8:27 remaining to put VC up 19-8, while a pair of Rebecca Kolbeck charity tosses put the Pirates up by 20, 30-10 with 1:53 on the clock.  Ventura led at the break, 34-12.

VC continued increasing the lead in the second half.  The Pirate advantage hit 30 points with Mallory Flot's free throws with 12:47 remaining in the game as the Pirates led 49-19.  The score of 63-28 also marked the Pirates' biggest lead of the game.

Williams shot 5-for-9 from the floor en route to her 12 points, and also picked up a block and an assist.  Sandy Perry scored 10 points with three assists while Kolbeck finished with nine points and seven rebounds.  Tina Stetson also grabbed seven boards and Karla Martinez dished out seven assists.  Katie Killebrew had six rebounds with two blocks.

The Pirates travel to Santa Maria to battle the Allan Hancock Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday Jan. 11 before returning home on Saturday Jan. 14 to take on Oxnard.  Both games begin at 5:30pm with the VC men's team following at 7:30 pm.
