Professor Joe Selzler, Chemistry

selected by Diana Nunez

Never in the world did I think that Chemistry would interest me. I never liked the class in high school. The only reason that I took Chemistry at Ventura College with Professor Joe Selzler was because it was just another requirement that I needed to graduate. I had decided to major in Biology so that meant that I would need to take more science courses. Soon after taking Professor Selzler’s course, I fell in love with Chemistry. I owe my enthusiasm for Chemistry to Professor Seltzer’s first day of class when he enthusiastically told us about the course. Shortly after that first day in his class that I decided to change my major to Bio-Chemistry. Professor Selzler showed me that Chemistry was fun as long as you understand it. Also, his office is always open. Whenever it is convenient for a student to meet with him, he will be there. He is always available to answer questions and will work with students one-on-one until they understand the subject. Professor Selzler is one of those special teachers who deserves recognition because he makes students realize that it is not about which teachers give out A’s, it is about which teachers make you earn them. Professor Selzler is a great teacher because he makes learning Chemistry fun.
