The
Pirates used Robin
Austin's
career high eight points in the first half to
keep the ship afloat until the defense kicked in
in the second half en route to a 68-40 victory
at Allan Hancock College Saturday evening.
Austin connected on four of five field goal
attempts, grabbed two rebounds, and dished out
an assist in the first half as VC battled foul
trouble, taking a 34-29 lead into
halftime. In the second half, Hancock did
not even take a shot for over five minutes and
were held scoreless until the 8:50 mark of the
period in the Pirate win.
For the second game in a row Ventura (8-1, 22-6)
began the game ice cold from the field,
connecting on just two of 11 shots in the game's
first seven minutes. While VC held a slim
4-3 advantage, Lindsay
Trout
connected on a 3-pointer from the left wing at
that point, sparking a 10-0 Pirate run over the
next two-and-a-half minutes.
Hancock (3-5, 11-16) managed to get the Pirates
into foul trouble and keep the game close from
the free throw line, and trailed by two, 19-17
with 5:41 on the clock. Sara
Arciniega
gave VC some breathing room with a 3-pointer
with 5:17 remaining in the half, and Austin
scored Ventura's next eight points to answer six
Lady Bulldog points. Ventura led at
halftime 34-29.
The second period saw Ventura's half-court
defense awaken from its slumber into its full
prowess. The Pirates did not allow a field
goal attempt by Hancock for over five
minutes,
causing numerous Lady Bulldog turnovers in the
process. Ventura scored 10 points before
Hancock took a shot, and had posted 16
points before the Lady Bulldogs scored
their first bucket with 8:48 remaining in the
game. Eja
Wong's
trifecta with 8:25 on the clock gave VC a 53-31
advantage, and the Pirates would not allow the
margin under 20 again. Ventura won the
game easily 68-40.
Jessi
Selleh
le the Pirate offense with 17 points. Wong
connected for 15 points on a season-high five
3-pointers and Austin hit for her career high of
eight points. Veronica
Williams
combated a tough shooting night with a team-high
eight rebounds and Danielle
Chupp
hustled to collect six boards. Sandy
Perry
dished out seven assists to lead VC.

State Conference with Santa Barbara, will host
