We Play Hard!

Ventura 63, @ Cuesta 31

January 24, 2007

Box Score

It is, and always will be, a team game at Ventura College.  Playing without leading scorer Jessi Selleh, who was nursing an injury, every Pirate played and every Pirate scored in the 63-31 victory at Cuesta College Wednesday night.  Ventura (6-0, 20-5) turned a cold start into a hot finish as they completed an undefeated first round of Western State Conference North Division play.

The Pirates showed the after effects of the longest trip of the conference season with an abysmal beginning to the game.  VC connected on two of its first 15 shots in the opening 12 minutes of the game.  Fortunately, the cold snap did not extend to the charity stripe as made free throws helped keep Ventura close to Cuesta (1-5, 10-14).  Trailing 17-14 with 4:44 remaining in the first half, Veronica Williams decided she had seen enough.  She scored the next six points, and had an assist to Sandy Perry for the next bucket, leading a 14-2 Pirate charge leading into intermission.  Ventura led at halftime 28-19.

Williams continued her hot streak in the second period, scoring the Pirates' first four points, and VC rolled the rest of the way.  Lindsay Trout found her shooting touch in the final 20 minutes, connecting on three long-range bombs, and Danielle Chupp had four rebounds and four assists in the half as well.  Throughout the half the Ventura lead expanded until it reached the final margin of 32, 61-31, near the final buzzer.

Williams totaled 18 points on the night, and also pulled down five rebounds.  Trout added 11 points  and Misty Alvarado added eight.  Perry, Chupp, and Alvarado all led the Windex crew, cleaning the glass with six boards apiece while Perry and Chupp were generous with four assists apiece.  Defensively Sara Arciniega grabbed three steals and Michelle Jameson took two charges.

The win was the Pirates' 20th of the season against five losses.  It marks the 18th consecutive season that VC has posted 20 or more wins during a season.

Ventura will travel to Santa Barbara on Saturday Jan. 27 to take on the second place Vaqueros.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm and the game will follow the Pirate men's game.  VC returns home on January 31 against Los Angeles Pierce.
