Ventura used a
solid shooting effort and fundamentally sound ball control
to defeat the host Glendale Vaqueros in the championship
game of the Vaquero
Shootout
69-60. The Pirates hit 13 of 24 shots from the floor
in the second half (54.1%) while turning the ball over just
five times in the period to turn a 32-29 halftime deficit
into the nine-point margin of victory.
The
tournament championship in the first triumph for VC since
their run through the Moorpark Tournament in December of
2004; and it is the Pirates' first title in Glendale since
2002. Coincidentally VC's 4-0 start this season is
their best beginning since 2002-03's 6-0 start.
The Vaqueros (3-1) put Ventura (4-0) down 6-0
early in the contest and led throughout the
first half. Glendale connected on four of
eight 3-point attempts and out-rebounded the
Pirates 15-9 in the opening period.
Glendale led 31-25 when they hit a trifecta with
1:42 remaining in the stanza before VC closed
with a 4-1 run to cut the halftime lead to
three, 32-29.
Ventura trailed 38-34 with 17:20 left in the
game when they went on a 13-1 run over the next
seven minutes. Tournament MVP Veronica
Williams tied the score with a bucket
at the 14:59 mark and a Misty
Alvarado bucket put VC up for the
first time in the contest on the next
possession. Glendale cut the lead back to
four, 51-47 with 8:44 left when All-Tournament
honoree Jessi
Selleh hit two 3-pointers with a 90
second span to help hold off the hard-charging
Vaqueros. Glendale pulled to within three
57-54 at the 6:29 mark, but Robin
Austin hit her first field goal of
the season giving VC back a seven-point
advantage, 61-54 with 5:39 on the clock.
The Pirates hit just enough free throws down the
stretch to hold on to the 69-60 victory.
Selleh led the offensive charge with 16 points
while Alvarado connected for a season-high 13
tallies. Jenelle
Conklin picked up 10 strong points
while Lindsay
Trout netted nine. Williams has
eight points to go along with a team-high seven
rebounds and Sandy
Perry dished out six assists.
The Pirates will host the 9th Annual VC-Kiwanis
Tournament of Champions Thanksgiving
weekend. VC opens the tournament on Friday
Nov. 24 at 6:00 pm against Porterville
College. Other first round games include
San Jose vs. Imperial Valley at 2:00 pm,
defending state champion Mt. San Antonio versus
Foothill College at 4:00 pm, and Contra Costa
College against Taft College at 8:00 pm.
All games will be held in the VC Athletic Event
Center.
