Los Angeles Pierce 57
January 31, 2007
Box
Score
Everyone played, everyone scored.
Lindsay Trout had
a career-high 16 points, including three 3-pointers,
and four Pirates scored in double-figures in VC's 83-57 team
victory over visiting L.A. Pierce. The Pirates move to
7-1 in WSC play and remain tied for the top spot
in the conference with Santa Barbara. The
Brahmas are now 5-3 and the closest competition
to the two front-runners with four games
remaining in the season.
After Jessi
Selleh hit a bucket on the Pirates'
first possession, the Brahmas caught fire
early. Pierce (5-3, 21-6) connected on
their first five shots, while Ventura (7-1,
21-6) misfired on eight of its next 10 shot
attempts. The Brahmas had a 10-6 lead with
15:24 left in the first half when they
mysteriously called a time-out and lost all of
their momentum. In the meantime VC found
their groove, scoring the game's next eight
points. The run started with a Selleh
3-pointer and continued with a Danielle
Chupp lay-up and a Trout long-range
bomb. Following two Pierce free throws,
Trout hit another bomb and Selleh connect on a
once-but no longer-rare 4-point play. When
the dust settled, the Pirates completed a 26-4
run with Samantha
Hinde's post spin move at the 7:47
point of the half, making the score 32-15 in
favor of VC. The Brahmas had a little
fight left in them, bringing the Pirate lead
back to eight, 37-29 with 2:56 on the clock, but
Trout's old-fashioned 3-point play with 1:42
remaining ignited a 7-3 run for Ventura to close
the half. VC led at intermission 44-32.
In the second period, Ventura slowly pulled away
with contributions from the entire team.
The Pirates had the advantage at 14 points,
60-46, with 10:49 left in the game when Sara
Arciniega hit a 3-pointer. 13
seconds later, following a blocked shot by Veronica
Williams, Arciniega took a pass from Eja
Wong and connected on an
old-fashioned 3-point play, essentially putting
the game away. The Pirates led by as many
as 28 points in the final minutes and brought
home the 83-57 victory.
Selleh led the Pirate scorers with 18 points to
go along with four steals from the defensive
end. Trout had 16 points while Williams
and Sandy
Perry netted 11 and 10 points,
respectively. Williams grabbed seven
rebounds and had two blocks and Perry also
dished out five assists. Wong had six
assists and six boards and Arciniega scored
eight points with four steals. Misty
Alvarado took two charges for VC in
the game.
The Pirates will continue their final march of
the season on Saturday Feb. 3 at Allan Hancock
College in Santa Maria. Game time is
slated for 7:30 pm following the Pirate men's
game at 5:30. VC returns home on Wednesday
Feb. 7 against Oxnard.
