Ventura 74 Los Angeles Southwest 39

Vaquero Shootout First Round

November 17, 2006

Box Score

Veronica Williams connected on her final nine shots of the first half en route to a career-high 21 points, and Sara Arciniega tied her own school record with three charges as the Pirates easily handled LA Southwest 74-39 in the opening round of the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College. Ventura, ranked #9 in the Southern California Coaches Poll advances to the championship semifinals Saturday Nov. 18 at 7:00 pm against #5 Santa Ana College in an early showdown of unbeaten teams.

VC (2-0) got off to a slow start offensively, scoring just nine points in the game's first 10 minutes, but its defense held the Lady Cougars (1-1) to just five points over that span, including a five-and-a-half minute scoreless skid to open the game.  At that point Williams took over the game, connecting on her final nine shots of the half, putting up 21 points total in the stanza, in leading VC to a commanding 43-20 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Ventura was fueled by it's bench strength.  After connecting on two 3-pointers in the opening half, Lindsay Trout turned two steals and fast-break lay-ups into two old-fashioned 3-point plays on her way to 14 points for the evening.  Arciniega took a charge in the first half and two more in the second to tie her own school record (also shared by Tara Sanders from 1993) for charges taken in a game.  She added a drawn offensive foul away from the ball for an exclamation point to her stellar defensive effort.  The Pirates cruised down the stretch for the 74-39 victory.

In addition to Williams' and Trout's offensive efforts, Sandy Perry was a perfect 4-4 from the floor with 10 points and Jenelle Conklin added eight.  Eja Wong had four assists, Williams led the team with eight rebounds, and Trout had three steals.

The Pirates advance to the semifinals of the Vaquero Shootout in Glendale with a 7:00 pm match-up against unbeaten and fifth-ranked Santa Ana on Nov. 18.  VC returns home on November 24 against Porterville College at 6:00 pm in the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions.
