Ventura 56, LA Valley 41

Ventura-Oxnard Crossover @ Oxnard

December 28, 2006

Box Score

Ventura scored points in bunches, including a late 11-2 run to defeat Los Angeles Valley 56-41 at Oxnard College in the Ventura-Oxnard Crossover.  The Pirates opened up a 21 point halftime advantage, only to see the Monarchs whittle it down to nine before VC went on their decisive run to close the contest.

The Pirates opened the game with a 9-0 advantage when Sandy Perry hit a 3-pointer off of an inbounds pass from Eja Wong with 16:00 remaining in the opening period.  LA Valley (12-8) scored the next two buckets before Sara Arciniega hit a long-range bomb form the left corner and connected on a drive and lay-up from the same spot to put VC up by 10, 14-4, at the 13:08 mark.  Perry hit five points on consecutive possessions with 5:29 left to put the Pirates up 25-8.  Ventura (14-4) went into halftime with a 31-10 lead.

In the second half, the Pirates came out with a post-holiday hangover, allowing the talented Monarchs back into the game.  Valley pulled to within 13, 31-18 when Jessi Selleh hit a bucket off of a Danielle Chupp assist to temporarily stop the bleeding.  VC continued to lose ground, however, as the Monarchs hit a 3-pointer to pull to within 10, 37-27, with 8:56 left in the contest.  Following a Veronica Williams bucket, Valley hit another trifecta to bring the margin to nine, 39-30 as the clock move under eight minutes.  The Pirates used a strong team effort to right the ship from this point on as they went on an 11-2 run over the next six minutes.  VC received scores from Williams, Wong, Selleh, and Perry to put the game out of reach.  Michelle Jameson hit two free throws to close out the scoring as VC prevailed 56-41.

Selleh led the Pirates with 19 points and six rebounds while Perry was a perfect 5-5 from the floor en route to her 14 points.  Williams contributed eight points.  Perry and Wong each had three assists while Wong and Lindsay Trout each grabbed three steals.  Robin Austin saw considerable action for the Pirates, filling in for Williams who had some foul trouble, and finished with three boards and a steal in addition to an outstanding defensive effort.

Ventura returns home on Friday Dec. 29 in the second half of the Ventura-Oxnard Crossover.  The Pirates will host Antelope Valley at 7:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.  VC defeated AVC 73-66 on Dec. 2 at the Gilcrest Invitational in Visalia.  The game will be preceded by  the Oxnard-LA Valley contest at 5:00 pm.
