Coach
Ned
Mircetic's
499th win was not pretty, but it counts just the
same as the Pirates came back from a halftime
deficit to defeat Moorpark 57-42. VC will
go for win #500 for its head coach on Saturday
Feb. 17 in the home finale against Cuesta
College. Ventura (10-1, 24-7) hit just two
of their first 12 field goal attempts, and
connected on two of 19 3-point attempts in the
first half before playing better in the
final period in the win.
The Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a Veronica
Williams
bucket and a Jessi
Selleh
3-pointer before going ice cold from the
floor. Moorpark (3-9, 8-21) kept things
interesting by staying just close enough to the
Pirates throughout the half. Eja
Wong
hit a 3-pointer to put Ventura up 16-9, and
William's 15-foot shot put VC ahead 18-11 before
the Raiders closed the half with a 10-2
run. Moorpark hit a pair of free throws
with 2.7 seconds on the clock to take their
first lead of the game into intermission, 21-20.
In the second half Ventura tried to leave little
doubt as to the outcome of the contest.
The Pirates took the lead on another Wong
trifecta on their first possession and Williams
had a pair of buckets to sandwich Selleh's
not-so-rare 4-point play as Ventura opened the
period with an 11-0 run, taking a 31-21
lead. The lead was still 10, 39-28 when
the Raiders made their final run of the night,
closing the margin to six, 38-32. Selleh
took a key charge with 8:09 remaining, taking
away a Raider basket which would have cut the
Pirate lead to four, and Ventura took advantage
of the turnover. Sara
Arciniega
(who earlier in the night had taken a charge of
her own, giving her 20 on the season breaking
Shannon Antunez's single-season record of
19 purple hearts) hit 3-pointers on the next two
possessions to put the game away with a 44-32
Pirate lead in the closing minutes.
Ventura led by as many as 18 points, 57-39
before the Raiders hit an inconsequential
trifecta to make the final score 57-42.
Selleh led the Pirates with 18 points, seven
rebounds, and two charges while Williams netted
14 points. Sandy
Perry
had her usual solid floor game with a team-high
nine boards and six assists. Wong
contributed eight points and six assists for the
Pirate cause. Arciniega had six points
with the two crucial second-half 3-pointers and
earned one purple heart to break one of the
Pirates most hallowed team records.
The Pirates take the floor in the regular season
finale on Saturday Feb. 17 at 7:30 pm against
Cuesta College. Historical significance
will abound in the Athletic Event Center as the
Pirates will attempt to nail down their 17th
consecutive Western State Conference
championship. Additionally head coach
Mircetic will attempt to become the first coach
in college basketball history (by all
accumulated research) to win his 500th game in
17 seasons as a head coach. To top off the
evening, it will be sophomore night as VC will
honor its six players who will be playing in
their final regular season home game in the
orange and black.
