Ventura 64, Santa
Ana 60
Vaquero
Shootout Semi-Finals November 18, 2006
Box
Score
It had all the
makings for an early-season classic with two highly ranked
undefeated teams: Santa Ana (4-0) ranked #5 in Southern
California and Ventura (2-0) ranked #9. The game lived
up to its billing and the Pirates held off the Dons 64-60 in
the semifinals of the Vaquero
Shootout at
Glendale College. VC advances to the tournament championship
game for the second year in a row facing the host Glendale
Vaqueros at 4:00 pm on Sunday Nov. 19. Glendale is
coached by Pirate alumna Monica Hang '02.
The Pirates (3-0) trailed early as they had
trouble getting the offense untracked against
Santa Ana's (4-1) pressure defense. VC
fell behind 13-6 with 14:55 remaining in the
opening half before Lindsay
Trout
hit one of her two 3-pointers to begin the
Pirate come back at the 14:25 mark. The
Dons led 20-15 with 9:18 on the clock, but the
Pirate defense would allow just two more Santa
Ana field goals for the remainder of the
stanza. Danielle
Chupp
hit a long range bomb with 2:13 left in the half
to give VC its first lead of the game 25-23,
and Sandy
Perry's
two free throws set the halftime margin at two,
27-25 in favor of the Pirates.
The Dons battled back early in the second half,
taking a 40-34 lead at the 12:25 point of the
period, but Trout's second timely trifecta
followed by a driving lay-up and a 3-pointer
from Eja
Wong
put VC back ahead 42-40 with 10:50 left in the
contest. Santa Ana tied the score at 53
with 5:10 remaining before the Pirates' hot
shooting at the foul line put the game
away. Wong hit a basket to put the Pirates
up for good, 55-53 with 4:23 on the clock, and
VC scored it's final nine points from the
charity stripe, missing just one attempt in the
final four minutes of the game. Ventura
connected on 21 of 26 free throw attempts
(80.8%) in the 64-60 victory.
Jenelle
Conklin
became the third Pirate to lead the team in
scoring in three games, netting 16 points with a
team-high seven rebounds, three steals and two
blocked shots.
Jessi
Selleh
scored 13 points with four assists and Veronica
Williams
added 10 points, six rebounds, and five
assists. Trout added 10 points while Perry
had three assists with four steals.
Ventura will take on host Glendale at 4:00 pm on
Sunday Nov. 19 in the tournament championship
game. The Vaqueros are coached by VC
graduate Monica Hang '02. Ventura returns
home Friday Nov. 14 at 6:00 pm against
Porterville in the opening round of the VC-Kiwanis
