  July 20, 2007   Atlanta, Ga. -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2006-07 Academic Honor Roll.  Ventura College made the list for the fourth straight year with a 3.272 GPA, placing seventh on the list.  The Pirates are the only California team on the national list.  READ MORE...

 

  July 19, 2007   The program completed another successful run of the We Play Hard Basketball Camp for Boys and Girls.  In the two weeks of camps, 165 young players participated and learned some of what "We Play Hard"  means at Ventura College.  See Photos of Session 1 and Session 2.

 

 

  July 8, 2007   The Buena High School Bulldogs continued their dominance of the Ventura by the Sea Golden State Tournament, winning their fourth consecutive title of the Pirates' mid-summer tournament by defeating Chandler High School from Arizona 59-51.  The Bulldogs also won the JV tournament.  The Golden State Tournament is co-sponsored by VC, Ventura High School, and Buena High School.  SEE RESULTS... 

 

  June 25, 2007   The Q104-7 DJ's took advantage of a late Pirate turnover to defeat the VC alumnae team 80-78 in "JVJ7," the 7th Annual Jox vs. Jocks VC Women's Basketball Alumnae Game.  The Q now holds a 4-3 advantage on VC and has won the past three contests.  SEE MORE INFO ON THE EVENT...  PICTURES COMING SOON... 

  June 20, 2007    (From the Ventura County Star, by Joe Curley)  With 10 of its 11 state championships coming on the hardwood, much of Ventura College's athletic tradition has been forged on the basketball court.  So it was impossible to ignore the sport's influence over a half- century in the school's second Hall of Fame class (including Renae Hofmann '00 and Carol Mills '84), announced this week by the Ventura College Athletic Association.  READ MORE...

Championship banners.  The makings of a Hall of Famer are usually as simple to spot as they are difficult to obtain.  The credentials of coaches Larry Baratte and Ned Mircetic, who have given Ventura College the majority of its 11 state championships, usher them into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, when they will take their rightful place alongside such other local luminaries as Lou Cvijanovich, Joe Vaughan and Ken Reeves.  READ MORE...

 

  June 4, 2007    The Pirates placed an exclamation mark on the 2006-07 year with a stellar performance in the classroom this spring.  The 12-member team earned a combined 3.39 grade point average this semester with each student athlete carrying an average of 13.9 units each (12.0 units is considered a full schedule).  READ MORE...

Worth, Williams has verbally committed to play basketball at Cal State-Los Angeles, and Perry will attend Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA.

  Mar. 20, 2007    ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Eastman Kodak Company announced the 2007 Junior College/Community College (JC/CC) Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team.  Ventura College's Jessi Selleh has been named Honorable Mention All-American for her efforts during the 2006-07 season.  Jessi is the third Pirate to ever be recognized on the Kodak/WBCA All-America team.  Nicole Ellis was Honorable Mention in 1993 and Courtney Young was 1st Team in 2004.  Selleh is one of only nine freshmen recognized this season.  READ MORE...  See WBCA Press Release

 

  Mar. 13, 2007      ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in cooperation with Eastman Kodak Company, announced the finalists for the 2007 Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team for Junior College/Community College.  The 32 finalists, who are voted upon by WBCA member coaches in each of the nine WBCA geographical regions, are now in the running for selection to the 10-member Kodak/WBCA All-America Team.  Ventura College's Jessi Selleh is among the finalists for this prestigious award.  READ MORE...  See WBCA Press Release

 

  Mar. 8, 2007    Pirate head coach Ned Mircetic has completed a banner year by being named to the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame.  Mircetic just completed his 17th year as the captain of the Pirates' ship, and led the team to it's 17th consecutive Western State Conference Championship.  He was also an assistant coach for the Pirates' men's team for five seasons helping earn five more WSC crowns from 1986-1990.  He coached VC to five state championships (1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002) and helped the Pirate men to another (1987).  Last month he became the fastest collegiate coach in the history of the game to amass 500 wins, accomplishing the feat in 17 years.  READ MORE...   Mar. 3, 2007    Legendary UCLA coach John Wooden did not measure success in wins and losses, but rather he defined success as "becoming the best you are capable of becoming."  The Pirates lost Saturday night in their Southern California Regional Final at Pasadena City College, 77-62.  But in losing, they proved they were a successful team as their effort on the floor in pushing the 33-1 Lancers to the limit for much of the contest was truly their best output of the season.  It was an effort of which even the Wizard of Westwood would be proud.  READ MORE...

 

  Mar. 3, 2007    The VC Pirate men's regional final game against Riverside will be broadcast on the web at www.waldcast.net tonight beginning at 6:50 pm.  During that broadcast, fans will receive periodic updates of the women's regional final at Pasadena City College from injured Pirates Jenelle Conklin and Michelle Jameson through Ventura County Star reporter Joe Curley.

  Feb. 27, 2007    Jessi Selleh has added another post-season award to her resume.  She has been named Third-Team All-State by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA).  She is the 25th Pirate, the 23rd under coach Ned Mircetic, to receive All-State honors, and the first since Courtney Young and Kristine Gleisberg earned the honor in 2004.  READ MORE...

  Feb. 21, 2007    Veronica Williams has been named the WSC North Player of the Week for  Feb. 11-17.  It is the second time this season that she has received the honor.  Veronica scored 29 points in two victories for the Pirates.   She was 13 of 27 from the field and 3 of 3 from the line.  Veronica also had 11 rebounds and 5 steals. Williams scored 15 points versus Cuesta with 7 rebounds. Veronica is a 6-0 sophomore forward from Righetti High School .

 

  Feb. 20, 2007    (From the Ventura County Star, by Joe Curley)  The historic season of the Ventura College women's basketball team hit a speed bump Monday, when the seeding committee released the pairings for the Southern California regional playoffs in Fullerton.  Ventura went into the final week of the season a strong candidate for a top-4 seed and home court throughout the regional, but slipped to the No. 7 seed, largely because of the forfeits suffered by fellow Western State Conference school Los Angeles Pierce.  Ventura (25-7) will host No. 10 Santa Ana (19-11) on Friday night at the VC Athletic Event Center.  READ MORE...

 

  Feb. 19, 2007    Ventura has received the #7 seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs that begin on Wednesday.  The Pirates (25-7) will host #11 Santa Ana College (19-11) of the Orange Empire Conference on Friday Feb. 23 at 7:00 pm at the Athletic Event Center.  VC defeated Santa Ana earlier this year, 64-60, on Nov. 18 at the Vaquero Shootout in Glendale (11-18-07 vs. Santa Ana).  See SoCal Regional Brackets 

 

  Feb. 18, 2007    Three Pirates were voted onto the Western State Conference North Division All-Conference team at the post-season coaches meeting on February 18, while two received Honorable Mention consideration.  The Ventura All-Conference team members include sophomores Sandy Perry and Veronica Williams and freshman Jessi Selleh.  Sophomore Sara Arciniega and freshman Eja Wong were named Honorable Mention All-Conference.  READ MORE...

Mircetic Nears Benchmark

     

Head coach Ned Mircetic has become the first coach in college basketball history to win 500 games in his first 17 seasons.  Joe Curley of the Ventura County Star has writen a series of articles on the Captain of the Pirates' ship as he has achieved this benchmark.

 

  Feb. 18, 2007    Historic 500th win clinches coach's legacy  The Ventura College women's basketball program, defined by winning, knows its true worth goes beyond wins and losses.  That was the message on a historic night at the VC Athletic Event Center Saturday night.  Ventura, the only program in California community college basketball history with five state championships, defeated Cuesta College of San Luis Obispo, 63-35, to clinch its 17th straight Western State Conference title.  One banner for every year since head coach Ned Mircetic was hired in 1990.  But, in victory, the 53-year-old coach, who emigrated from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, as toddler, also achieved a feat believed to be unmatched in the 110 years of college basketball history.  READ MORE...

  Feb. 17, 2007    Mircetic receives high marks for milestone at 'lower' level  The man who brought Ned Mircetic to Ventura College is coaching in the Big 12 Conference now, taking chartered flights to games and coaching against some of the most glittering NBA prospects.  On the recommendation of former Oxnard College coach David Carmichael, former VC men's coach Phil Mathews hired Mircetic as his part-time assistant in 1985.  READ MORE...

  Feb. 17, 2007    Truly historic occasions are rare, but it history appeared in a double-feature at the Athletic Event Center Saturday night.  Coach Ned Mircetic won his 500th career game in 17 seasons, faster that any other coach in college basketball history, as the Pirates defeated Cuesta 63-35, and the Pirates clinched a 17-Peat, its 17th consecutive Western State Conference championship, with the victory.  READ MORE...

  Feb. 6, 2007    Pirate freshman Jessi Selleh has been named the WSC-North Player of the Week for the period of Jan. 29-Feb. 4.  It is the third time this season that she has been honored for her outstanding play.  Jessi scored 35 points in two victories for the Pirates. Jessi was 13 of 23 from the field (4 of 10 from three) and 5 of 5 Ventura from the line. She also had 4 assists and 6 steals. Jessi scored 18 points versus Pierce with 4 steals. Jessi is a 5-9 freshman guard from Royal High School.

  Jan. 27, 2007    Rain was falling outside the Sports Pavilion at Santa Barbara City College Saturday night, but a different kind of rain did in the Pirates in their 73-65 loss at the hands of the Vaqueros.  The hosts nailed three 3-pointers in turning a 41-31 Pirate lead with 13:44 remaining into the eight point win, tightening up the Western State Conference race.  READ MORE...

  Jan. 10, 2007    The Pirates used a balanced scoring attack and strong contributions from the bench to hold off Allan Hancock College 73-64 at the Athletic Event Center.  Jessi Selleh's 21 points led four Pirates in double-figures while Misty Alvarado and Danielle Chupp turned in strong performances off the bench to move VC to 3-0 in WSC-North play.  READ MORE...   Jan. 10, 2007    Pirate freshman Jessi Selleh has been named the WSC-North Player of the Week for the period of Jan. 1-7.  It is the second time this season that she has been singled out for her outstanding play.  Jessi scored 36 points in VC's first two WSC-North games with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Jessi was 13 of 23 from the field (3 of 9 from three) and 7 of 10 from the line.  Jessi scored 10 points and took two charges versus Santa Barbara and netted 26 points with 6 rebounds and 3 assists at Pierce. Jessi is a 5-9 freshman guard from Royal High School.

 

  Jan. 9, 2007    For many years, the Pirates have achieved greatness on the court and in the classroom.  While the 2006-07 team is still a work in progress on the hardwoods, they have shown they are up to the challenge in the classroom, posting a 3.17 team grade point average for the fall semester.  READ MORE...

  Dec. 29, 2006    Observers could  trace Ventura's 52-48 overtime loss to Antelope Valley Friday evening at the Athletic Event Center back to one pass, one shot, or one defensive possession; looking for a reason for the loss.  But they would be missing the point, because at VC playing hard is the ultimate goal, not winning, and the Pirates gave a great effort despite the loss.  READ MORE...

  Dec. 20, 2006    Rocky Balboa opened in theaters Wednesday.  It played out in the VC Athletic Event Center Wednesday evening.  In the movie the title character is a once great champion seeking to find past glory against a talented opponent - at VC the main character, the VC Pirates, are a once great champion seeking to find past glory against a talented opponent.  The Pirates won this round, defeating Reedley College 60-58.  READ MORE...   Dec. 20, 2006    (From the Ventura County Star; by Joe Curley)  By most estimations, there are four legitimate front-runners for this season's California community college women's basketball state championship.  Split up equally between the South — Mount San Antonio (17-0) and Pasadena (15-0) — and North, San Joaquin Delta (14-1) and Reedley (15-2), the quartet have combined to go 6 this season.  One of the losses?   Dec. 19, 2006    Pirate freshman Jessi Selleh has been named the WSC-North Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 11-17.  Jessi scored 39 points in the two games at the Canyons Crossover Classic and grabbed nine rebounds while dishing out two assists.  She connected on 13 of 20 field goals (five of eight from 3-point land) and hit eight of nine free throws.  She also took three charges over the weekend.  Selleh is a 5-9 freshman guard from Royal High School.

 

  Dec. 17, 2006    Ventura Head Coach Ned Mircetic has directed VC for 561 games over the past 16-plus seasons.  During that time, a Pirate has collected three charges in a game just four times, and the fourth was Sara Arciniega's third in Ventura's 77-49 victory over San Francisco in the final game of the Canyons Crossover Classic in Santa Clarita.  READ MORE...   Dec. 16, 2006    Jessi Selleh scored 23 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead four Pirates in double-figures in a 76-64 victory over a physical Cypress team at the Canyons Crossover Classic in Santa Clarita.  Veronica Williams broke a 10-10 tie early, and Sandy Perry followed up with a 3-pointer and VC never looked back, breaking a 3-game losing streak to the Chargers dating back to the 2003-04 playoffs.  READ MORE...

 

  Dec. 9, 2006    The Pirates used a strong finish in the first half and a strong beginning in the second half to build a big lead on 4th-ranked Canyons in the consolation championship of the Rose City Classic.  VC needed all of its advantage to hold off the fast breaking Cougars 55-53 in Pasadena.  READ MORE...   Dec. 5, 2006    The Pirates will tip off the Rose City Classic versus the host Pasadena City College Lancers at 8:00 pm on Thursday Dec. 7.  VC is ranked #7 in the latest Southern California Coaches Poll while Pasadena is ranked #2.

 

  Dec. 3, 2006    The Pirates used pinpoint precision on offense and a well disciplined defense to upend Northern California's #2 ranked team in the 5th place game of the Gilcrest Invitational Tournament in Visalia.  Ventura shot an astronomical 70.8 percent from the floor in the second half in their 81-54 defeat of the Reedley Tigers.  READ MORE...   Dec. 2, 2006    In the 1986 classic film Hoosiers, progress included "second farm tractors, second farm cars, and indoor plumbing."   For the Pirates, progress is winning a close game down the stretch as VC defeated Antelope Valley 73-66 in an elimination game of the Gilcrest Invitational at College of the Sequoias.  Ventura will play Northern California's #2 ranked team, Reedley College, at 12 noon on Sunday in the tournament's 5th Place game.  READ MORE...(SEE PICTURES)

 

  Dec. 1, 2006    Bad habits are hard to break.  The Pirates are getting to know this all too well as they let another game slip away, losing 59-57 to San Jose in the quarterfinals of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias.  VC will take on Antelope Valley Saturday at 4:00 pm in a possible elimination game in Visalia.  READ MORE...   Nov. 30, 2006    It took Ventura eight minutes to get it's land legs back after the three-plus hour drive to Visalia, but get them back they did as the Pirates defeated the host Sequoias Giants in the opening round of the Tom Gilcrest Invitational, 66-49.  VC will play San Jose City College at 8:00 pm on Friday Dec. 1 in the quarterfinals of the 16-team affair.  READ MORE...

  Nov. 25, 2006    The last time Imperial Valley visited the Athletic Event Center to play Ventura, the Lady Arabs ended the Pirates' season.  This time the Lady Arabs prevailed again, 63-61, but VC can learn some valuable lessons and apply them as the season will continue.  Imperial Valley defeated Ventura in the semifinals of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions, placing the Pirates in the 3rd place game against Contra Costa Sunday Nov. 26 at 2:00 pm.  READ MORE...

 

  Nov. 25, 2006    The Pirates' Veronica Williams was named the Western State Conference-North Division Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 13-19.  She scored 51 points in four games with 28 rebounds, 11 assists and 8 steals. Williams was 22 of 43 from the field and 7 of 13 from the line and was named MVP of the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College.  The Pirates were 4-0 during the week.  Veronica is a 6-0 sophomore forward from Righetti High School .

  Oct. 24, 2006    The brackets have been announced in the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale College Nov. 16-19 and at the Tom Gilcrest Invitational at the College of the Sequoias Nov. 30-Dec. 3.  VC will open with LA Southwest on Friday Nov. 17 at 3pm at the Vaquero Shootout, and will play Santa Ana or El Camino on Saturday Nov. 18.  At the Gilcrest Tournament, the Pirates open with the hosts, College of the Sequoias, at 8pm on Thursday Nov. 30 and will play Cerritos or San Jose on Friday Dec. 1.

  Oct. 23, 2006    The Pirates have confirmed details on their upcoming pre-season scrimmage.  VC will host hope International University, an NAIA school from Orange County, on Saturday November 4 at the VC Athletic Event Center.  The scrimmage will begin at 2:15pm.  No admission will be charged at the scrimmage.  See the Full Pirate Schedule...

  July 20, 2006    The program completed another successful run of the We Play Hard Basketball Camp for Boys and Girls.  In the two weeks of camps, 191 young players participated and learned some of what "We Play Hard"  means at Ventura College.  See Photos of Week 1 and Week 2.

 

  July 10, 2006    Buena High School defeated Valencia High School to win their third consecutive Golden State Tournament crown.  Ventura High School won the consolation championship and Ventura's JV's were tops in their division.  See Tournament Results
