January 30, 2008
Box
Score
Coming into the game, Ventura knew they would be
playing without three starters due to illness
and injury, and the loss of another Pirate early
in the second half left VC with seven players.
The Pirates did not let the adversity stop them,
however, as the jumped out to an early lead and
never let up in the 70-31 victory over Allan
Hancock College at the Athletic Event Center.
VC
scored on their first four possessions, taking
advantage of their size advantage over the much
smaller Lady Bulldogs. The Pirates were up
8-2 following
Julie Heurung's bucket from
Eja Wong's lob pass with 17:43 remaining in
the opening period. A
Sara Nicholson bucket at the 10:20 mark put
Ventura (6-0, 21-5) up 20-10 before Hancock
closed the gap to 22-14 with a 3-pointer with
7:55 on the clock. VC tightened up the
defense from that point on, not allowing a
Bulldog point for the remainder of the half,
outscoring Hancock (1-5, 1-20) 19-0 to close the
half. Ventura led at intermission 41-14.
The
Lady Dogs outscored VC 4-2 early in the second
half before the Pirates came back to life.
An old fashioned 3-point play from Heurung at
the 17:38 point began a 10-2 spurt over the next
five minutes. Consecutive baskets by Wong
in the period's ninth minute put Ventura on top
64-24, and the Pirates rode it in from there,
winning 70-31.
Indira Kaljo led the Ventura offense with 20
points while Wong and Heurung contributed 19 and
17 points respectively. Heurung led VC's
42-25 rebound advantage with 12 boards.
Kaljo grabbed seven rebounds,
Lindsay Trout had six, and
Jessica Jameson grabbed five caroms.
Wong dished out four assists on offense and
Donielle Griggs had seven steals for the VC
defense.
VC
was without
Jenelle Conklin and
Randi Hicks due to injury and
Michelle Santizo due to illness. The
three have started most of the Pirates' WSC
games this season. Also,
Christine McPherson injured her ankle early
in the second half, leaving Ventura with but
seven healthy bodies with whom to play the game.
The
Pirates do not have much time to get healthy
before the second round of conference play
begins. They host Cuesat College on
Saturday Feb. 2 with a 5:30 tip-off. The
game will be followed by the Pirate men at 7:30
pm. |
