Score
Traveling south past LAX for the first time since a 2003
trip to the state semi-finals in San Diego, the Pirates took
off on the 2007-08 season with a 72-37 win at El Camino
College in Torrance.
Jenelle Conklin led a
balanced attack with 14 points while
Indira Kaljo and
Julie Heurung each
contributed nine points to the VC cause.
Randi Hicks led the team on the boards with nine
rebounds. In all, each of the 12 Pirates scored and
rebounded; while playing at least 11 minutes in the solid
team win.
Ventura (1-0) began the season off hot, scoring on five of
their first six possessions. Kaljo started the run by
hitting a jumper from the left wing on VC's first
possession, and by the time
Christine McPherson hit a
shot in the paint with 14:12 remaining in the opening period
putting the Pirates up 14-0, seven different players had
tallied two points each.
Donielle Griggs hit a
bucket at the 10:08 mark giving Ventura a 22-2 advantage
before the Warriors had even hit a shot from the floor
(their two points to that point were both free throws).
The Pirates could not maintain the early momentum, however,
as El Camino (0-1) closed the gap to 30-17 with just over a
minute remaining in the stanza. A Kaljo 3-pointer
padded the lead back to 16 points, but a Warrior free throw,
a Pirate turnover, and a fluke bank shot off of a tipped
pass at the buzzer allowed El Camino back to within 33-20 at
the intermission.
VC left no doubt to the outcome of the contest in the first
minute of the second half.
Jessica Jameson hit a
lay-up followed by two quick buckets from Conklin to open
the lead back to 19 points with 18:45 showing on the game
clock. Conklin followed with a pair of charity tosses
and Heurung encored with a pair of sweet post move baskets
to extend the Pirate advantage to 45-22 at the 15:47 mark.
El Camino held fast for the next five minutes, trailing
56-32 with nine minutes remaining, but the Pirates' depth
proved to be too much as VC scored the games next 10 points
to put the game away. The Pirates cruised in the end
to the 72-37 victory.
Conklin, Kaljo, and Heurung led the offense while Jameson
contributed seven points and Griggs and Hicks each netted
six. In addition to Hicks' windex work,
Lindsay Trout helped the
Pirates' 59-29 rebound advantage with seven boards and Kaljo
and Heurung added six and five caroms, respectively. Griggs
led VC with four steals while
Michelle Santizo dished out
three assists.
Ventura will travel to the
Vaquero Shootout at
Glendale College next weekend. The Pirates will open
with Los Angeles Southwest College on Friday November 16 at
3:00 pm. They will follow that contest up with either
Cerritos or Fullerton on Saturday. VC will open up at
home in the
VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions
on Friday November 23 at 6:00 pm against Porterville
College.
