Score
Sophomore
Jessi Selleh hit two
3-pointers in the first half, scoring a season-high 12
points in helping the 5th-ranked Pirates to a 70-54 win over
#10 Fullerton in the semifinals of the
Vaquero Shootout at
Glendale College. Sophomore
Indira Kaljo also paced VC
with 17 points and nine rebounds, sending the Pirates to the
championship game of the tournament for the third
consecutive year. VC will take on #13 Santa Ana in
Sunday's final at 4:00 pm.
For the first time this season, the Pirates faced a deficit
on the scoreboard as Fullerton (2-3) took the opening tip
and scored on the first possession of the game.
Trailing, 2-0, Ventura (3-0) came back with 10 unanswered
points to go up 10-2, and Kaljo hit a running 10-footer with
13:20 remaining on the clock to put VC ahead of the Hornets
14-4. Fullerton was scrappy and well coached as they
hung tough with the Pirates, closing the gap to 21-18 before
Selleh connected on a long-range bomb off of an
Eja Wong pass to stem the
tide. Selleh scored on a fast-break lay-up on the next
possession to build the lead back to 26-18 with 7:12 left in
the period, forcing a Hornet time-out.
Following an incredible charge taken by Wong and a Fullerton
technical foul,
Jenelle Conklin hit a
bucket to put VC up 29-18 late in the half. However,
leading 37-27 in the final minute of the stanza, the Pirates
mismanaged the basketball once again, giving up a turnover
and allowing Fullerton open look at a 3-pointer, which they
hit a the buzzer to cut the VC advantage to 37-30 at
halftime.
In the final period, the two teams battled it out, with the
lead fluctuation between seven and 12 points much of the
half.
Julie Heurung hit a
15-footer with 13:55 left to play to make the lead 50-39 and
Kaljo's old-fashioned 3-point play gave VC a 54-42 edge at
the 9:57 mark. Heurung connected on a bucket from a
strong move in the pivot to put VC ahead 56-46.
Lindsay Trout connected on
a running 8-footer as the shot clock wound down with 3:43
left to play giving Ventura a 62-46 lead, pretty much icing
the contest. Kaljo's 3-pointer with 2:50 on the clock
sealed the deal, putting Ventura up 65-48. The Pirates
rode the momentum to a 70-54 win.
Kaljo and Selleh led the offense with Conklin also adding 12
points. Heurung contributed eight points, as well.
Kaljo led the VC rebounding charge while
Jessica Jameson grabbed six
boards with Conklin, Selleh, and Heurung grabbing four each.
Wong handed out five assists and
Michelle Santizo grabbed
two steals. Wong and Selleh each drew a charge in the
game.
The Pirates advance to the championship game of the Vaquero
Shootout on Sunday at 4:00 pm at Glendale College against
#13 Santa Ana College. VC returns to the Athletic
event Center for its home opener on Friday November 23
against Porterville College at 6:00 pm in the
