Ventura 81, @
Los Angeles Pierce 57
February 6, 2008
Box
Score
The game really was closer than the 81-57 score
indicated. The Pirates used a 16-0 run in
the first half and a 9-0 run in the second to
blow past the 15th-ranked Los Angeles Pierce
Brahmas in Woodland Hills Wednesday night.
Lindsay
Trout had a career night, connecting on
eight of nine field goal attempts and making
both of her free throws, to net 19 points to
lead the offensive charge.
The Pirates jumped out quickly, building a 6-1
lead as they connected on their first three shot
attempts. Pierce answered quickly,
however, with a 6-0 run to take a 7-6 advantage
with 14:49 on the clock. Two minutes later
Julie
Heurung connected with a lay-up from a Jenelle
Conklin assist to complete an 8-0 run for VC
resulting in a 14-7 margin. Indira
Kaljo's 3-pointer with 10:44 remaining put
Ventura (8-0, 23-5) ahead 19-11.
With 9:19 remaining in the first half and the
Pirates ahead 21-16, Pierce drew a foul on VC as
the Brahmas were shooting a lay-up, resulting in
two Brahma free throws. At the same time,
a fan standing near the baseline at that end of
the court passed out near the playing
floor. The game was delayed for 15 minutes
as the fan received medical attention and when
the game resumed, Pierce hit both free throws to
pull them to within 21-18. Those
would be the final two Pierce points for nearly
seven-and-a-half minutes as Ventura would race
to a 16-0 run. The spurt, punctuated with
numerous fast break baskets, was marked by
unselfish play by all of the Pirates on the
floor. It was one of the best runs of the
season by VC and it resulted in a 39-21 halftime
advantage.
LA Pierce (4-3, 18-6) came back strong as the
second period began, scoring five unanswered
points. The Pirate lead remained between
12 and 15 points for the next nine
minutes. VCled 56-41 with 9:51 remaining
in the contest when Conklin was fouled shooting
a lay-up. The Pierce player was then
assessed a technical foul, giving VC an
additional two free throws. Eja
Wong calmly sank the two technical free
throws, and Conklin netted her charity tosses,
beginning a 9-0 VC run that would put the game
away. Trout's 3-pointer off of a Jessica
Jameson pass at the 8:28 mark ended the run
with the score 65-41. Ventura would
maintain that advantage, and expand it until
Heurung hit a charity toss with 3:58 on the
clock giving VC a 76-46 advantage, it's largest
lead of the game. The Pirates cruised the
rest of the way to the 81-57 win.
In addition to Trout's 19 points, Kaljo (13
points), Wong (12 points) and Heurung (11 points
also were in double figures. Michelle
Santizo led the Pirates in rebounding with
nine boards while Kaljo pulled down seven
caroms. Jameson collected six
rebounds. Wong and Conklin each handed out
five assists, as the Pirates had 23 assists
compared with 18 turnovers. Conklin also
had four steals to lead the defense.
The Pirates are off this weekend, returning to
the court next Wednesday, February 13.
They will host the Moorpark Raiders for a 5:30
pm tip-off at the Athletic Event Center.
The game is the featured event of VC's first
annual Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness
Day. Along with the VC Psychology Club,
the Pirates are hosting a day's worth of events,
including music, information booths, and
"special hearts" on the campus quad
from 11am to 1pm. At 5:00 pm the
information booths will move to the AEC, along
with the "special hearts" and a silent
auction. The cheerleaders will be
conducting a 50/50 raffle during the game, and
breast cancer survivors will be honored before
the game and during halftime. All funds
raised during the events will benefit the
Ribbons of Life Breast Cancer Foundation, a
local support group that had its roots at
Ventura College in 2002. More information
on the event can be found on www.VCweplayhard.com
and more info on the Ribbons of Life group can
