Vaquero Shootout @ Glendale
Box
Score
For the second consecutive outing, every Pirate on the
roster scored and every Pirate grabbed a rebound as VC
rolled to a 98-21 victory over LA Southwest in the first
round of the
Vaquero Shootout at
Glendale College.
Indira Kaljo put up 18
points with nine rebounds and four assists to lead the
charge, while
Jenelle Conklin contributed
18 points with four steals.
Michelle Santizo and
Julie Heurung also achieved double-figures with 11 and
10 points, respectively. The win propels Ventura into
the tournament semifinals against Fullerton College Saturday
at 5:00 pm.
The game was never in doubt as
Jessica Jameson controlled
the opening tap, hitting the ball to Kaljo who hit Conklin
streaking to the basket for a lay-up barely two seconds into
the contest. Conklin would score the Pirates' first
six points as Ventura (2-0) built a 15-0 lead five minutes
into the game. VC shot 54 percent (20-37) from the
floor in the opening period while amassing a 55-10 lead at
the halftime break.
The final stanza began much as the first one did, with the
Pirates outscoring LA Southwest (0-2) 17-0 before the Lady
Cougars could get on the board. When the final buzzer
had sounded, VC scored 98 points, the most they had scored
since posting 109 against Allan Hancock in February of 2005, in
the 78 point victory.
Kaljo, Conklin, Santizo and Heurung all netted
double-figures while Jameson and
Sara Nicholson each netted
eight points. As a team, Ventura out-rebounded the
Lady Cougars 60-24. Kaljo's nine boards led the windex
crew with
Lindsay Trout and
Christine McPherson each
pulling down seven boards.
Eja Wong
and Santizo each grabbed five rebounds. Kaljo and Wong
each dished out 4 assists while Trout and Jameson each
distributed three dimes. As a team, the Pirates had 22
assists as compared with 15 turnovers. Santizo picked
up five steals and Conklin added four thefts.
Ventura advances to the semifinals of the Tournament with a
5:00 pm date with Fullerton College. The Hornets are
ranked #10 in the latest regional poll while the Pirates
come in at #5. VC's first test will be followed with a
concluding game at Glendale on Sunday. Ventura makes
its home debut on friday November 23 at 6:00 pm against
Porterville in the first round of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament
of Champions.
