Score
Ventura had defeated
Moorpark 37 consecutive times dating back to
1991 entering their contest at the Raider
Pavilion Saturday night. They left little
doubt early on that by the end of the night in
would be 38. VC scored on its first four
possessions, racing out to an 8-0 lead and never
really looked back in their 86-51 victory.
Returning to a theme from early in the year,
every Pirate scored and every Pirate rebounded
as VC set up a showdown against fellow
conference undefeated Santa Barbara Wednesday
evening at the Athletic Event Center.
Jenelle
Conklin connected on a drive to the basket
on the first possession of the game and Ventura
(3-0, 18-5) would never trail again. They
went ahead 8-0 before Moorpark (2-2, 7-15) hit a
3-pointer. The Pirates continued their hot
start, scoring the game's next 14 points, taking
a 22-3 lead before the Raiders hit another
trifecta at the 10:52 mark of the first
half. The Pirates had a balance attack
from the onset as seven different players scored
their first 19 points of the game. VC
would eventually make the score 40-14 on a pair
of free throws from Indira
Kaljo before the Raiders showed some signs
of life. Moorpark closed the half with a
14-2 run of their own to narrow the gap to 42-28
at halftime.
Ventura righted the ship after intermission,
jumping out 8-2 in the first four minutes of the
second period, ending any doubts about the
outcome. Kaljo grabbed an offensive
rebound and hit a short jumper, followed by a Michelle
Santizo steal and assist to Julie
Heurung to force a Raider timeout with the
score 50-30 with 16:09 remaining. Santizo
hit a 3-pointer from the left corner on the next
Pirate possession to continue the
onslaught. Ventura won going away 86-51.
Kaljo had an excellent all-around game with 23
points, seven rebounds, and 2 assists. She
shot 9-13 from the floor, including 2-3 from
3-point land, and hit all three of her charity
tosses. She also was the primary defender
on Moorpark's leading scorer, who came into the
game averaging nearly 20 points per game.
She (the Raiders' leading scorer) only managed
13 points and was limited to two field goals,
both early in the first half. Heurung and
Conklin each added 10 points to the Pirate cause
while Eja
Wong and Sara
Nicholson added nine and eight points,
respectively. Santizo was a monster on the
glass once again, leading the way with nine
boards and Heurung added seven. Lindsay
Trout grabbed five rebounds. Santizo
also had four steals and three assists.
Ventura will return home on Wednesday Jan. 23 as
they host Santa Barbara City College. The
Pirates (3-0) and Vaqueros (4-0) are in a
virtual tie for first place atop the Western
State Conference North Division. Tip-off
will be at 5:30 pm and the game will be followed
by the VC men at 7:30. |
