Score
Many
times this season, Ventura has used an entire
team effort to win a game. Wednesday
night's regular season home finale was no
different, as every player scored, 10 of the 11
players grabbed a rebound, and nine players
contributed an assist as the Pirates soundly
defeated Oxnard College 73-33. After the
game, the players received their
"18-Peat" t-shirts, symbolic of the
team's 18th consecutive Western State Conference
North Division championship.
Both teams were a bit sluggish at the
onset. After Jessica
Jameson scored the first bucket of the game,
Ventura (11-0, 26-5), gave up a Condor 3-pointer
and the lead, 3-2. Jenelle
Conklin and Sara
Nicholson scored on consecutive possessions
giving the Pirates the lead for good, and
another Nicholson field goal gave VC an 8-3
advantage. Oxnard (1-10, 10-14) hit a shot
with 15:09 on the clock making the score 8-5
before the Pirate defense took over. VC
held the Condors scoreless for nearly nine
minutes, but the Ventura offense could only
manage 12 points during that span, giving the
Pirates a 20-5 advantage with 6:54
remaining. The VC lead hit 16 points, 23-7
on Indira
Kaljo's 3-pointer at the 5:49 mark, before
Oxnard outscored Ventura 9-5 down the stretch to
make the halftime score 28-16.
Oxnard hit two of the second half's first three
scores, closing the gap to 30-10 with 18:24
remaining in the contest. At that point
Kaljo took over the game, connecting on three
consecutive 3-pointers to begin an 18-0 Pirate
run over the next 7:39. Eja
Wong closed out the run with a long-ranger
of her own with 11:07 on the clock, making the
score 48-20. Tow more 3-pointers, by Wong
and Michelle
Santizo, over the next two minutes extended
the Pirate advantage to 54-23 with 8:12
remaining. Christine
McPherson netted four of VC's final six
points to set the final score at 73-33.
Kaljo led the VC attack with 16 points and 11
rebounds. Wong contributed 15 points while
Julie Heurung netted an even dozen for the Bucs.
Santizo, Donielle Griggs, and Heurung all
grabbed six rebounds for the Pirates, who
outrebounded OC 52-24 in the game. Lindsay
Trout handed out six assists and three steals
for VC while Santizo also added three thefts in
the game.
Prior to the game, the six Pirate sophomores,
Eja
Wong, Jenelle
Conklin, Lindsay
Trout, Sara
Nicholson, Randi
Hicks and Indira
Kaljo, were recognized for their
contributions to the program on this, their
final regular-season home game. After the
game, the sophomores, and freshmen, received
their 18-Peat WSC Championship t-shirts.
The Pirates conclude the regular season on
Saturday Feb. 23 in Santa Maria at Allan Hancock
College. THe game is scheduled for a 5:30
tip-off with the VC men following at 7:30
pm. The Pirates will return home to open
the Southern California Regional Playoffs on
