We Play Hard!

Ventura 110, Reedley 55

November 29, 2007

1st Round, Gilcrest Invitational @ Sequoias

Box Score

Basketball is a team game, and the Pirates experienced a team win in their 110-55 victory over Reedley College in the opening round of the Gilcrest Invitational Tournament at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia.  All 10 players scored at least seven points, and six scored in double-figures as VC posted its highest point total in five seasons, eclipsing the century mark for the second time in the last four contests.  With the win, Ventura advances to the tournament quarterfinals against San Jose City College, who advanced with a 74-67 victory over Riverside.

Reedley (3-5) connected on six of its first ten shots to take a 14-12 lead with 15:00 remaining in the first half.  Julie Heurung started a 15-0 Pirate run over the next three minutes with an old-fashioned 3-point play, and Michelle Santizo closed it with a modern trifecta at the 11:57 mark to put VC ahead 27-14.  Eja Wong tallied a team-high 15 points in the half, as every Pirate scored with the exception of leading scorer Indira Kaljo (who would open the second half with a 3-point shot, rallying with 13 second half points).  Ventura (6-2) closed the final minute of the stanza with a 6-0 run to make the halftime score 53-31.

VC opened the second half with a 9-2 run over a three minute span, stretching the advantage to 62-33, closing the run on two Sara Nicholson buckets.  Six minutes into the period, the Pirates led 68-41 when Donielle Griggs  connected on a 3-pointer from the left wing to begin the decisive VC run.  The Pirates would outscore the Tigers 15-2 over the next four minutes, taking a commanding 83-43 lead on Santizo's free throw with 10:25 on the clock.  The only question remaining was if Ventura could reach 100 points, which they did at the 4:11 mark on Jessica Jameson's basket off of a Kaljo assist.  VC would score the game's final 11 points to set the final 110-55 margin.

All 10 Pirates who played scored at least seven points with six of them netting double-figures.  Eja Wong, playing her best game in the orange and black, scored 17 points to go along with seven assists and four steals.  Santizo completed the point guard dynamic duo with 15 points, including four 3-pointers to go along with three steals and three assists.  Kaljo finished with her 13 second-half points and seven rebounds while Nicholson tallied an even dozen for the Pirates.  Heurung and Jameson each scored 10 points, respectively with Heurung grabbing eight rebounds, and Jameson pulling down seven boards.  Randi Hicks had eight rebounds for Ventura while Jenelle Conklin had six boards with three steals.  Lindsay Trout also pulled down six caroms in the win.

Ventura's 110 points are the most a Pirate team has scored since February of 2003 when VC defeated LA Pierce 118-32.  It is tied for the eighth-most points scored by a Pirate team during the Ned Mircetic era (1990-present), tied with VC's 110 points coincidentally scored against King's River College (Reedley's former name) in a 110-29 win almost 12 years to-the-day ago on Nov. 30, 1995 at the Gilcrest Invitational.

The Pirates will play the San Jose City College Lady Jaguars in a tournament quarterfinal on Friday at 4:00 pm.  Last year VC lost to the Lady Jags 59-57 in the same quarterfinal game.
