Favorite Teachers
Jay Varela (Theater)
selected by
Eja Wong
My
favorite teacher award goes to the History of
Motion Pictures instructor, Professor Jay
Varela. He is also one of Ventura College’s
acting instructors and play performance
organizers. Professor Varela made class
fascinating by mixing into his lectures a
combination of entertainment history along with
his own personal experiences. The know-how of
the industry he shared was an entertainment
history lesson in itself. This made a fun
class even more interesting.
As a
Theater major and someone who is interested in
film history, film-making and acting, I
appreciated learning from someone who had so
much to share. His class was special because he
related what we learned in class to everyday,
real-life situations. I thank you today,
Professor Varela, for inspiring me to learn more
about the theater and film industry and showing
me how to appreciate entertainment.
