Kaljo Signs With Tulane in New Orleans

Apr. 24, 2008    Pirate All-American guard Indira Kaljo has signed a national letter of intent to continue her academic studies and her basketball career at Tulane University in New Orleans.  Kaljo, who transferred to VC this season from Utah State, was the Pirates leading scorer (16.6 ppg) and rebounder (6.7 rpg) in leading VC to a 29-6 season record, including a perfect 12-0 Western State Conference mark for the team's 18th consecutive conference title and a berth in the State Elite Eight, Ventura's first since 2003.  She was named the Team MVP at the post season awards banquet.

Kaljo connected for 74 3-pointers this season, a total which ranks her fifth on the program's single-season record book in that category.  Additionally, she is fifth in career scoring average (16.6 ppg), fifth in career free throw percentage

(75.9%, 110-145), and fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (37.8%, 74-196).

In the post-season, Kaljo began collecting awards.  She was named First-Team All-Western State Conference and Second Team All-State.  Additionally she earned Honorable Mention honors on the State Farm / WBCA All-American team.  She was named the Collegiate Women's Athlete of the Winter Season by the Ventura County Star.

Indira also excelled in the classroom, receiving a Scholar Athlete Award.  She helped the team to a program record 3.35 Team GPA last fall, and looks to help VC earn its fifth consecutive place on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's National Academic Honor Roll for the 2007-08 academic year.

Tulane University is an NCAA Division I program located in New Orleans, LA.  The Green Wave won the 2007 Conference-USA regular season championship with a 26-7 record.  Head Coach Lisa Stockton's squad finished the 2008 season with a record of 16-14.  One of the assistant coaches at Tulane is Shanna Cook, who was an assistant at the University of New Orleans, coaching Ventura College grads Amber Magner '94, April Garrish '97, and Monique Taylor '02.
