Coach David Breslin enters his 11th season as an assistant
at Ventura College. The Pirates are 303-45 (.871) during his
tenure, including a 114-2 record (.983) in WSC play and a 28-7
(.800) mark in the post-season.
One of Breslin’s duties in the program is guiding the
academic progress of each student athlete. His work has
played a large part in Ventura’s recognition on the WBCA
Academic Honor Roll in each of the past four seasons and in
winning the COA Scholar Team Award in 2002 (3.37 team GPA).
The team consistently posts a 3.0+ grade point average under
Breslin’s guidance, including last season's 3.272 cumulative
GPA.
Breslin was born and raised in San Francisco. He played
basketball at Riordan HS and earned his B.A. from San
Francisco State in 1969. He taught fifth grade at Marshall
Annex School for six years before receiving his M.S.L.S.
degree from CSU-Fullerton in 1973.
Coach Breslin arrived at Ventura College as a reference
librarian in 1977. He retired from his full-time position at
VC in the summer of 2006.
Breslin coached in the San Francisco Police Athletic League
from 1972-74, and helped form a city-wide fifth grade
league. When he moved to Ventura in 1977, Breslin coached in
the Malibu city leagues and also spent time with the Ventura
Youth Basketball Association (VYBA). Coach Breslin headed
the boy’s program at Oak Grove HS from 1993-96, and served
as the head girl’s coach at the Ojai school for one
season. He joined the VC coaching staff in 1997.
Breslin’s involvement with Pirates women’s basketball
began during the 1995-96 season as he started the highly
successful mentor program, which pairs student athletes with
members of the College community. He was the lead mentor in
the program for two years before joining the coaching staff.
He has since helped the Pirates to 10 straight WSC titles
and the three state championships.
Coach Breslin has been married to his wife, Cynthia, for 18
years. They have a combined family of five grown children:
Michelle, Nadine, Mariesa, Shayna, and Bryce; and three
grandchildren: Josephine, Evan and Alana.
