It
was like Christmas all over again, and the
Pirates played the part of Santa
Claus. Every player who saw action
Saturday night gave at least one assist to a
teammate, as the Pirates defeated Compton
83-50 at the Athletic Event Center. Kris
King led five players in double-figures
with 18 points and led the team with eight
rebounds. She also had four blocked
shots and three assists. With the
solid passing, the top-ranked Pirates
connected on 56 percent of their field goal
attempts as they closed out the
non-conference portion of their schedule
with a perfect 19-0 record.
Ventura (19-0) started the game out on fire,
connecting on their first five shots,
including a 3-pointer from Jessi
Selleh, a pair of buckets from Donielle
Griggs, and a pair of baskets by Chanelle
Brennan. The Lady Tartars were
just as hot early. Compton (5-13)
opened up the game with a pair of long
3-pointers and trailed 7-6 two minutes into
the game. VC was ahead 11-10 with
16:06 left in the opening half when they
went on a 16-0 run over then next six
minutes to break the game open. Julie
Heurung hit Brennan with a dump pass for
an easy lay-up to put Ventura ahead 21-10 at
the 12:32 mark and Brennan connected on a
fast break lay-up with 10:03 remaining to
nullify a pair of Lady Tartar free throws
that ended VC's run just seconds
before. Michelle
Santizo hit Griggs on another Pirate
fast break to put VC ahead by 20, 37-17,
with 4:55 on the clock. Ventura went
into intermission doubling up the Tartars
48-24.
VC kept the hammer down in the second half,
outscoring Compton 18-5 in the period's
opening seven minutes. Five different
Pirates got into the act during that run
including six points from King, four from
Heurung and Santizo, and a pair from Erika
Ward and Brennan. Irma
Rivera got her first points of the
season, a free throw with 2:50 remaining in
the contest, and the Pirates cruised in the
final minutes to a 83-50 win.
King netted 18 to lead the way, but , like
Joe Cocker, she got by with a little help
from her friends. Brennan had 14
points on 7-8 shooting and Griggs and Selleh
each had an even dozen. Santizo scored
10 points and Heurung just missed
double-digits with nine points. King
led the Windex crew, cleaning the boards
with eight rebounds while Heurung and
Santizo each grabbed seven. Griggs had
six rebounds. Santizo handed out seven
assists to lead the way while Amanda
Padilla, Ward, and Selleh all had four
dimes. Each player for VC had at least
one assist. King and Heurung each had
four blocked shots while Santizo and King
each pulled in three steals.
Ventura closes out its non-conference
schedule with an undefeated record for the
third time in the Mircetic era. The
other two years were 1995-96 and
1999-00. VC opens Western State
Conference North Division play on Wednesday
Jan. 7 by hosting Cuesta. Tip-off is
scheduled for 7:00 pm and the game will be
the nightcap for the VC men's game at 5:00
pm.
