VENTURA COLLEGE

@ Ventura 103, Moorpark 57

January 17, 2009

Chanelle Brennan hit fast break lay-ups, she scored on drives to the basket, she nailed pull-up jumpers, and she hit a 3-pointer.  She hit almost everything Saturday night, shooting 13-14 from the floor as she racked up a career-high 29 points against the Moorpark Raiders.  Donielle Griggs played the game of her career, scoring 20 points and holding the Raiders' leading scorer 11 points under her average on the defensive end ( 9 points Saturday, five in the last 3:36 of the game).  Together they led the Pirates to a 103-57 victory over their cross-county rival, the 40th consecutive win over the Raiders since 1991, before a large crowd at the Athletic Event Center on the Pirates' annual barbeque night.

The two teams traded turnovers to open play before Julie Heurung scored the Pirates' first four points, the second off of an assist from Michelle Santizo.  A Santizo steal that led to a transition bucket by Griggs put Ventura (22-0, 3-0) ahead 6-2 with 18:07 left in the opening period.  Moorpark (10-11, 2-2) turned the ball over on six of their first eight possessions as VC built a quick 12-3 lead four-and-a-half minutes into the contest. At the 8:40 mark, Erika Ward had a steal and a long pass to Brennan for another fast break lay up making the score 28-9.  On the very next possession it was Ward to Brennan again, like Montana to Rice, making the lead 21 points.  The Pirates would connect on 21 of their 33 first half shot attempts (63 percent), many off of Raider turnovers, en route to building a 53-22 halftime lead.

In the second half, Moorpark tried to hang tough, but eventually succumbed to the Pirates' depth.  Heurung's old-fashioned 3-point play at the 8:54 mark gave VC a 79-42 advantage and the Pirates led 81-46 with 7:47 on the clock.  VC went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to help the Jell-O start to jiggle.  Ventura pulled away in the end as Griggs put the Pirates into triple-digits with a drive down the left side with 1:06 remaining.  VC won the contest 103-57.

Brennan's 29 and Griggs' 20 points led five Pirates in double-figures.  Jessi Selleh quietly had 16 points for VC while Heurung and Ward added 14 and 12 points, respectively.  Heurung grabbed six rebounds to lead the Pirates on the glass and Santizo pulled down five boards.  Ward handed out eight assists, Santizo had five, and Heurung and Griggs each dished out four dimes.  Brennan had four steals to lead the VC defense while Santizo and Ward each had three thefts.

The Pirates, ranked #1 in the state, will put that ranking on the line on Wednesday Jan. 21 at Santa Barbara City College.  The Vaqueros are 4-0 in Western State Conference play, 1/2 game ahead of VC.  Ventura has only one one game at the Sports Pavilion over the past three years, and look to be tested by the Vaqueros in the contest.  Every play of that game can be heard live and in living color online at www.HomeFieldSports.com. The women's game will begin at 7:00 pm, immediately preceded by the VC men's game at 5:00 pm.
