Quarterfinals, VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions

VC freshman Amanda Padilla has been hampered by illness and injury for the first three weeks of her Pirate career.  Friday night she had a breakout performance, dishing out 10 assists to go along with 10 points and five rebounds in leading Ventura to an 87-51 win over Taft College in the first round of the VC-Kiwanis Tournament of Champions at the Athletic Event Center.  Padilla's passing performance was the highest single-game output of dimes since November, 2003 for the Pirates.  Ventura will take on San Jose in the tournament semifinals Saturday at 7:00 pm.

Julie Heurung dominated the paint early, scoring six of Ventura's (6-0) first 10 points.  When Christine McPherson hit a free throw with 15:16 remaining in the first half, the Pirates had built an 11-0 lead before the Lady Cougars hit their own charity toss a minute later.  Back-to-back 3-pointers from Padilla at the 13:07 and 12:07 marks, respectively, stretched the Pirate advantage to 18-2 and the score was 25-4 before Taft (2-6) hit their first field goal past the halfway mark of the opening period.  The teams played the remainder of the stanza even, as VC took a 48-29 lead into intermission.

Erika Ward took the game over as the second half began, scoring eight of VC's first 10 points, and 12 of their first 20, helping stretch the Pirate lead to 66-37 with 12:40 left in the contest.  Ventura led 74-48 with just over six minutes remaining before they ended the game with a 13-3 run, making the final count 87-51.

Chanelle Brennan led the Pirates offensively with 19 points on 8-9 shooting.  Heurung finished with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Ward finished with 16 points and two steals.  Padilla's double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds were augmented with five boards and two steals and Donielle Griggs also added 10 points on the evening.  Kris King contributed eight points and eight rebounds while Brenda Van Someren dished out four assists.

Other games in the tournament saw #1 and three-time defending state champion Mt. San Antonio defeat Porterville 78-42 while #11 College of the Canyons beat Contra Costa 92-34.  #17 San Jose City College won the nightcap 67-31 over Imperial Valley.  Saturday's games begin with Contra Costa and Porterville at 1:00 pm followed by Taft and Imperial Valley at 3:00.   Canyons and Mt. SAC will face off in one semifinal at 5:00 pm with the second-ranked Pirates and Lady Jags squaring off in the finale at 7:00.  Sunday's game times are 12:00, 2:00, and 4:00 at the Athletic Event Center.
