Erika Ward Named

Ventura
College freshman Erika
Ward was named to

games in the Elite
Eight, Ward scored 46
points for VC, including
31 in the team's 106-93
semifinal loss to
eventual state champion
Pasadena City
College. In two
games Erika shot 13-24

including 9-14 from

connected on all 11 of
her free throw
attempts.

VC
Plays Hard But Falls to
Red Hot Pasadena 106-93
in State Semifinal
If
anyone would have said
that the Pirates would
shoot 48 percent from
the floor, make 9-23
3-pointers, and score 93
points against Pasadena
in the State Semifinals
Saturday night, one
would think VC would
advance to Sunday's
state championship
game.
Unfortunately, as well
as the Pirates played,
Pasadena played that
much better, shooting
nearly 51 percent,
hitting 14-21
3-pointers, and scoring
106 points in Ventura's
heartbreaking first, and
last, loss of the
season. Playing
hard means giving your
best effort without
making excuses, and VC
certainly played hard,
despite the result that
ended another historic
season for the
Pirates.

It
certainly was not a work

To
say the Pirates were in
a little foul trouble in
the first half of their

With sophomore starters Michelle

sophomore co-captain Jessi
Selleh filled the
void, along with help
from freshmen Chanelle
Brennan, Erika

Pirates' 77-51 win over
the Cougars.
Selleh scored 14 big
first half points on 6-7
shooting, while Brennan
netted 10 with six big
rebounds, and Ward added
eight points in the
period. Padilla
played 14 minutes of
solid point guard in the
half, as VC advances to

Pirates
Survive Trip to Santa Barbara With 84-81
Overtime Win Over Vaqueros
Historically,
Santa Barbara is rarely an easy place for the
Pirates to play. History repeated itself
Wednesday night as VC blew a big lead in the
second half, had to come from behind, and
finally defeated Santa Barbara City College
84-81 in overtime at the SBCC Sports
Pavilion. Julie
Heurung had a monster night with 24 points,
including the game-tying 3-pointer with 9.6
seconds remaining in regulation, and 17 rebounds
to lead the Pirates into sole possession of
first place in the Western State Conference
North Division over the Vaqueros.

Brennan,
Griggs Lead VC Past Moorpark
Chanelle
Brennan hit fast break lay-ups, she scored
on drives to the basket, she nailed pull-up
jumpers, and she hit a 3-pointer. She hit
almost everything Saturday night, shooting 13-14
from the floor as she racked up a career-high 29
points against the Moorpark Raiders. Donielle
Griggs played the game of her career,
scoring 20 points and holding the Raiders'
leading scorer 11 points under her average on
the defensive end ( 9 points Saturday, five in
the last 3:36 of the game). Together they
led the Pirates to a 103-57 victory over their
cross-county rival, the 40th consecutive win
over the Raiders since 1991, before a large
crowd at the Athletic Event Center on the
Pirates' annual barbeque night. READ

Totally
in the Zone from the Ventura
County Star by Joe Curley
Before
she found basketball, Erika
Ward was a Little
League pitcher and shortstop struggling to
respond to the laughter of the boys across the
diamond. So she proved herself.
“After she struck
out the first kid, they laughed at him,” said
Ward’s father, Jim. “After she struck
out the next guy, who was the best player on the
team, they shut up. I
think she hit the third guy on purpose. This is
a 10-year-old.” Eight
years later, opponents still take notice at the
silent drive shining from the Ventura College
women’s basketball team’s No. 11.

Record Setting Perfromance Earns Her Second
Player of the Week Honor
Last
Wednesday against Cuesta, Erika
Ward broke the records of two of the all
time greats at Ventura College. She bested
Julie Hardy's record of 49 points in a game by
scoring 51. She also broke Renae Hofmann's
record of seven 3-pointers in a game by hitting
10. Based on that record setting feat,
Ward was named the Western State Conference
Player of the Week for the period of Jan.
5-11. This is her second such award this
season, she was Player of the Week Nov. 10-16,
and it is the sixth time a Pirate has earned the

Ventura
