Mar. 14, 2009    VC Plays Hard But Falls to Red Hot Pasadena 106-93 in State Semifinal

If anyone would have said that the Pirates would shoot 48 percent from the floor, make 9-23 3-pointers, and score 93 points against Pasadena in the State Semifinals Saturday night, one would think VC would advance to Sunday's state championship game.  Unfortunately, as well as the Pirates played, Pasadena played that much better, shooting nearly 51 percent, hitting 14-21 3-pointers, and scoring 106 points in Ventura's heartbreaking first, and last, loss of the season.  Playing hard means giving your best effort without making excuses, and VC certainly played hard, despite the result that ended another historic season for the Pirates.    READ MORE...

Mar. 13, 2009    Pirates Survive With 60-59 Win, Advance to State Final Four

It certainly was not a work of art, but it definitely will work for the Pirates.  VC rode the coattails of a huge 3-pointer by Michelle Santizo with 3:08 remaining, and clutch free throws from Chanelle Brennan and Julie Heurung in the final minute to survive a big and talented Foothill College team 60-59 in the state quarterfinal round at Fresno's Selland Arena.  The win advances the Pirates to the State Final Four for the 11th time since 1993 and the first time since 2003.  Ventura will play Pasadena City College, who survived a war of their own in a 95-93 overtime thriller against Northern California's top-seed San Francisco, in a 7:00 pm contest at Selland Arena in Fresno.  The game will be heard on www.HomeFieldSPorts.comREAD MORE...  Read Story from Ventura County Star

Mar. 7, 2009    Selleh, Freshmen Lead VC Through Foul Trouble and into State Tournament

To say the Pirates were in a little foul trouble in the first half of their Regional Final game against College of the Canyons Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center would be an understatement.  With sophomore starters Michelle Santizo, Julie Heurung, and Donielle Griggs all on the bench in foul trouble, sophomore co-captain Jessi Selleh filled the void, along with help from freshmen Chanelle Brennan, Erika Ward, and Amanda Padilla in the Pirates' 77-51 win over the Cougars.  Selleh scored 14 big first half points on 6-7 shooting, while Brennan netted 10 with six big rebounds, and Ward added eight points in the period.  Padilla played 14 minutes of solid point guard in the half, as VC advances to the State Elite Eight for the second year in a row, and a record 13th season overall. It is said that teams spend the first few games of a season searching for an identity.  If that is the case, the Pirates had best keep looking as they connected on but 32 percent of their field goal attempts in their 57-46 season-opening victory over El Camino College Tuesday night at the Athletic Event Center.  There were signs of promise, however, scattered throughout the evening, like the play of sophomore Michelle Santizo, who led the way with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  READ MORE... Read Story from the Ventura County Star
