Mesa Sweeps JV & Varsity Divisions in
2009 Golden State Tournament

Both
the Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams from Rio
Mesa High School defeated Ventura High in
the championship game of their respective
divisions to sweep the titles of the 2009
Golden State Tournament held at Ventura
College.
The
varsity team, which upset Ventura in last
year's semifinals before losing to six-time
defending champion Buena, gained a measure
of redemption by ending the Bulldog's title
run in the semifinals 36-32. In the
final, the Spartans fell behind the Cougars
early before hot outside shooting led them
to the 55-50 championship victory. Rio
won Pool C of the preliminary round by
defeating Nordhoff, Villanova, and Royal
high schools.
In
the JV Division, the Spartans swept Pool A
by defeating Buena, Highland (Palmdale) and
Birmingham (Van Nuys). They then
overcame an early deficit to defeat
Ventura's JV team 33-24. See
