Pirates Earn 3.34
GPA for Spring '09;
3.35 Team GPA for
2008-09 Year
June
9, 2009
The Ventura College Pirates women's basketball
team continued it's academic success in the
spring semester, posting a team grade point
average of 3.34. That combined with the
fall's 3.37 made VC's GPA for the 2008-09
academic year 3.35, a notch above last year's
3.34 overall mark. Freshman
Lacey Escamilla and sophomore co-captains
Donielle Griggs and
Jessi Selleh led the way for VC with perfect
4.0 averages.
Overall, six of the Pirates'
12 student athletes posted a 3.5 or better GPA,
while 10 of the 12 earned above a 3.0 average.
For Escamilla, it is her first perfect academic
semester while Griggs earned her second
consecutive 4.0. Selleh has set an
academic standard which will never be broken.
She earned six consecutive semesters of perfect
4.0 scores. She never received any mark
below an "A" during her entire time at Ventura
College.
The Pirates team GPA will be
nominated for the Women's Basketball Coaches
Association (WBCA) National Academic Honor Roll.
Their 3.34 overall GPA earned them the #6
ranking in 2007-08. VC has appeared on the
national list for five consecutive years.
Results for 2008-09 are expected in August.
VC has also been nominated
for the CCCAA Scholar Team Award. The
honor, which includes only fall GPA's for
basketball, will be given out in the spring of
2010. The Pirates last won that academic
award for the 2001-02 year in which they became
the first team in any sport in state history to
win both the state championship and the state
scholar team award. The Ventura College
men's swimming team has since repeated that feat
in 2005.
