Pirates Advance to State Finals  From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley...

3-13-2010  Chanelle Brennan got the chills as the final seconds ticked off.  Amanda Padilla and Erika Ward didn't know weather to embrace or shed a tear.  Head Coach Ned Mircetic was throwing high fives in the coaches' box.  And the state title has yet to be decided.

Brennan had 23 points, 10 rebounds and a key 3-point play in the final minute as the Ventura College women's basketball team shrugged off a year's worth of regret to edge City College of San Francisco, 60-56, in the state semifinals before a standing-room crowd Saturday afternoon at Cal Lutheran's Gilbert Center.  After an eight year absence, the state's most successful Community College women's basketball team will be the road team - in designation only - in the state championship game, in the county, no less, against the South's top seed, Fullerton.  READ MORE...  See Story from the Ventura County Star

Ventura Counting on its Postseason Experience  From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley

3-13-2010  A regular season spent collecting wins like trading cards.  Regional playoff tests building into a come-from-behind state quarterfinal victory against bigger Northern opposition.  Today comes the moment the Ventura College women’s basketball team looks into the mirror.  After a pair of mirror-image seasons into the Final Four, the Pirates (32-1) will attempt to break through today at 3 p.m. against the North’s top seed, City College of San Francisco (28-3), and earn their first state final berth since 2002.  READ MORE...

Pirates Overcome Laney; Advance to Final Four

3-11-2010  Their backs against the wall, the Pirates were in need of inspiration.  Down by 11 points with 2:16 remaining in the first half, 32-21 against Laney College of Oakland in the State Quarterfinals, they found that spark in All-State point guard Amanda Padilla.  She converted a lay-up from a Chanelle Brennan assist to begin the long road back into the game for VC.  The Pirates would close the gap to six by halftime, and come from behind in the second half to register a 70-62 victory over a tough Eagle team.  Padilla scored 24 points, including 15 in the second half to lead Ventura into the State Final Four for the second year in a row, and a record 12th time during Coach Ned Mircetic's 20 year tenure.  READ MORE...  See Story from the Ventura County Star

Hofmann to Help VC Celebrate Part of its Past From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley

3-10-2010  The busy schedule of a patrol officer in San Francisco’s Mission District keeps Renae Hofmann on the streets and off the court these days.  But the former Buena High and Ventura College standout guard returns to the game of her youth when she comes south to visit her sister, Selena.  “I’m able to play when I’m down visiting my nieces,” said Hofmann. “It brings me back full circle, back to the pure love and passion that I have for the game.”  The Kelley sisters, 10-year-old Victoria and 7-year-old Kaela, will soon have a state Hall of Famer for a personal basketball tutor.  Hofmann, 30, the shy, modest leader of Ventura College’s undefeated 2000 state championship team, will be inducted into the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame tonight at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza.  READ MORE...

Unrivaled Connection  From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley

3-9-2010  With every measured pass, every sharp cut and every cool finish, the wins have piled up and the seasons have nearly been spent.  Two seasons that feel like four years.  “I was just talking to Lacey (Escamilla) about this a couple of days ago,” said point guard Amanda Padilla. “It feels like I’ve been at VC for four years already, because we’re so close.  “It’s going to be really sad when it all ends.”  Only three wins or one loss remain for the six sophomores of the Ventura College women’s basketball team, who enter this week’s Great Eight at Cal Lutheran as one of the winningest classes in school history.  READ MORE...

Pirates Headed To State Tournament

3-6-2010  It had everything one could want from a regional final.  It was competitive, physical, intense, and dramatic.  There was great play from both teams, and in the end the home team won out.  Chanelle Brennan took an assist from Erika Ward and scored her final bucket of the evening with 15 seconds left to give the second-seeded Pirates a hard-earned 61-53 victory over #7 San Bernardino Valley in the Southern California Regional Finals Saturday night at the Athletic Event Center.  The victory, which closes out the second consecutive undefeated home schedule for VC and gives them 42 consecutive home wins since January 2008, propels the Pirates to the state tournament which will be held in Ventura County at the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center at California Lutheran University next week. Sure-Handed Player  From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley

3-4-2010  Amanda Padilla didn’t need to feel anything to know something serious had happened. The pain was written all over the horrified faces of her teammates.  “The look on their faces when it happened,” said Padilla, “is something I’ll never forget.”  Ventura College’s slick point guard was playing as well as anyone in the state when she suffered a freak hand injury hours before a home game against MiraCosta on Dec. 19.  That the Buena High product missed only six games, and has played even better since slicing off part of the middle finger of her left hand, is just another way in which the 5-foot-4 Padilla has triumphed over a physical opponent during her remarkable season.  READ MORE...

Renae Hofmann '00 to be Inducted into CCCWBCA Hall of Fame   From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley

3-3-2010  When Renae Hofmann was inducted into the Ventura College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, the former state women’s basketball Player of the Year, a recent graduate of the San Francisco police academy, was in the midst of her intense field training program and couldn’t afford to take a moment’s break.  Instead of the inductee, it is Hofmann’s proud mother, Lisa McCombs, who is immortalized on the school’s web site, holding her daughter’s commemorative plaque.  County basketball fans will get a rare second chance to celebrate the tough Buena High and Ventura College guard on March 10 when Hofmann will be inducted into the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. With the Great Eight at Cal Lutheran, the Hyatt Westlake Plaza will host the CCCWBCA’s annual Banquet of Champions. READ MORE...

Getting Up to Speed  From the Ventura County Star by Joe Curley

2-10-2010  It was her opening week of practice at Ventura College and the coaching staff might as well have been speaking a foreign language.  Chanelle Brennan had never run a scripted fastbreak. It didn’t feel like the game she knew.  “I was confused,” said Brennan. “I wasn’t used it. I asked myself why we were doing it.”  Nearly two seasons and countless flowing trips down the floor later, Brennan, the loping legs of the Pirates’ swashbuckling fastbreak, looks like she’s been running the system her entire life.  “Now,” said Brennan, “it seems easy to me.”  READ MORE...

Ventura Survives Close Game in Oxnard

1-27-2010  It is a story that has been played before in Oxnard.  The Pirates did not play their best game of the season, and that coupled with an inspired effort by the Oxnard Condors resulted in a close call for the state's top-ranked team.  VC used an 8-0 run in the contest's final 2:14 to turn a 3-point lead into a 63-52 win at the Condor Center Wednesday evening.  The Pirates, who trailed by four-points at halftime, turned a lackluster effort in the first 20 minutes into solid play in the second period in the victory.  VC was led by Kris King's 20 points and five rebounds while Amanda Padilla had 13 points and five assists.  READ MORE...

Teamwork Leads Pirates to Win Over Glendale

12-29-2009 When Glendale College Head Coach Monica Hang donned the orange and black for Ventura College, teamwork was a hallmark, and as point guard, she was at the center of it.  It was only appropriate that despite missing the current point guard Amanda Padilla (who wears the same #10 as Hang wore) due to injury, the Pirates used tremendous teamwork to defeat Hang's Vaqueros 76-59 in the semifinals of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament.  Ventura had 17 assists against 13 turnovers, a positive ratio, and eight of the 10 Pirates to see action scored as #1-ranked VC completed the Optimist final match-up against 7th-ranked San Bernardino Valley at 6:00 pm on Wednesday Dec. 30 at the Athletic Event Center.   READ MORE...

Pirates Use Strong Second Half in 72-39 Win

12-28-2009 The Christmas break ended too soon for the Pirates, so it seemed like they took an extra 20 minutes of vacation on the offensive end of the court Monday night.  VC hit just 26 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening half before finding their stride in the second of their 72-39 win over Southwestern College in the first round of the VC-Optimist Club Holiday Tournament at the Athletic Event Center.  Chanelle Brennan's free throw shooting carried VC in the first half, and she was steady in the second while Erika Ward and Kris King both shrugged off sluggish starts to finish the game strong.  Ventura advances in the tournament to face Glendale College in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.  Glendale is coached by former Pirate standout Monica Hang.    READ MORE...

Pirates Break For Holiday With 67-38 Victory

Lose-Win Situation  by Joe Curley from the Ventura County Star
